Which compressor to choose?

For the correct choice of a compressor it is most important to know the consumption of compressed air for the expected application, which is most often given in litres per minute (l/min).
There are two ways to find out this value:

SOLUTION 1 – Finding out the consumption of already existing equipment

  • To find out the consumption of the existing equipment you will need a pressure vessel with a known volume V in litres and fitted with a pressure gauge
  • Next find out the working pressure P1 (bar) at which your equipment works
  • Fill the pressure vessel with air, and to a pressure that will be at least
  • 2 bar higher than the working pressure of your tool. We will designate this initial pressure in the vessel as P2 (bar)
  • Connect the tool to the pressure vessel and start working with the tool, but in such a way that you simulate real work (e.g. when working with a screwdriver – 3 seconds taking the screw out of the box and setting it in place, 3 seconds to pull the screwdriver from the balancer, 5 seconds the actual screwing)
  • At the moment of starting work with the tool press the stopwatch and end the time measurement at the moment when the pressure in the vessel falls to the value of the working pressure P1. We will designate the measured time interval as T

SOLUTION 2 – Finding out the consumption from the manufacturer's materials
Most manufacturers state the value of the air consumption of their products in promotional or technical materials. Make sure, however, whether it is the correct value. You will in fact find two options: the instantaneous and the average air consumption. The average consumption is the one you need for the correct choice of a compressor. In the event that you have the instantaneous consumption available, it is necessary for you to multiply its value by the factor of the actual duration of consumption against the total working time (example - in the example given above the screwdriver in reality worked 5 seconds, while the total time of the working cycle was 11 seconds; the factor is in this case 5/11 = roughly 45 %)

SIZING THE COMPRESSOR

The size of the compressor that you will use depends not only on its ability to deliver the required volume of air, but it is absolutely necessary to take the type of compressor into account. Screw compressors are intended for continuous operation, since they are of the rotary type and have a significantly lower operating temperature, so they can work continuously; with them it is enough simply to go by the ascertained consumption and the output of the compressor. With piston compressors the situation is different. Due to the reciprocating movement of the piston in the cylinder, friction arises causing a high temperature, and therefore piston compressors must rest for a certain time so that overheating does not occur, which would damage the compressor unit. This rest
time depends on the quality of the machine, on whether it is a matter of industrial, professional or home use, and further on the manner of compression, on whether it takes place in one or more stages. For the correct choice it is therefore necessary that the air displacement of the compressor is always significantly higher than the average consumption of your equipment. Therefore consider carefully the manner of use of the compressor and use the attached tables to select a suitable machine.

Example 1
A car service works with a drill with an instantaneous consumption of 5 l/s. The consumption per minute under load is 300 l/min, but the drill is worked with at maximum load only 30 % of the time. The actual real consumption is thus 0,3 × 300 = 90 l/min. It is a professional application, so it is best to choose a single-stage piston compressor with an air displacement of at least 346 l/min. Optimal is the use of a compressor with the A39B unit, whose air displacement is 393 l/min and whose required motor power input is 2,2 kW.

SELECTION OF THE MACHINE

After the optimal size of the unit has been chosen, take into account further needs:

  • Required pressure – find out what highest pressure you will need for your consumers; the pressure leaving the compressor should be at least 1 or 2 bar higher, since in the piping or hoses pressure losses occur
  • Electrical voltage – make sure whether you have sufficiently strong circuit breakers so that problems with the electrical network do not occur
  • Size of the pressure vessel – the larger your pressure vessel, the more air you have accumulated to cover unexpected peaks in demand. The compressor moreover switches on less often and its service life increases. Take into account also the requirements for handling and the dimensions of the machine
  • Mobility of the machine or dimensions – every customer has different ideas about use
  • Noise level – consider the possibilities offered by modern silenced compressors, if noise is a big problem
  • Supplementary equipment – dryer, tandem version, star-delta switch and the like

Oil-free compressors

The main property of these compressors is the design without the need to use oil inside the compressor unit. The moving parts (piston and connecting rod) are designed according to specific criteria and materials with a low coefficient of friction and high resistance to wear are used in them, which eliminates the need for oil lubrication during operation. These units thus guarantee the delivery of compressed air without any presence of oil. The maintenance of oil-free compressors is significantly reduced to a minimum of necessary operations and for the user the use of an oil-free machine means the elimination of many problems with oil leaking during transport of the machine. All these properties predestine oil-free compressors for use predominantly in home and small craft applications.

Oil-lubricated compressors with direct connection to the motor

With compressors with direct drive the compressor unit is connected directly to the shaft of the electric motor. This method of design provides a very compact solution and eliminates losses in the transmission of energy. The cover of the unit directs the intake air over the cylinder head, which ensures improved cooling and the delivery of higher-quality compressed air and extends the service life of the compressor. The system of oil lubrication by means of injection guarantees the circulation of oil inside the compressor unit and optimal lubrication of all moving parts takes place. Thanks to the optimal lubrication the cooling efficiency increases, the temperature falls and the service life of the machine is extended.

Oil-lubricated compressors with transmission by means of V-belts

The electric motor and the compressor unit are equipped with shafts with pulleys and the transmission of torque between them is ensured by one or more V-belts. Thanks to the ratio of the two pulleys, the speed of the compressor is always significantly lower than the speed of the motor, which ensures significantly quieter operation, extends the service life and increases the level of performance of the unit compared with direct drive. ABAC compressor units are equipped with cylinders either of cast aluminium or of cast iron and are closed by a head with massive finning and an aftercooler, which increases the efficiency of cooling and the volume of air delivered. Further they are connected to the crankcase to improve lubrication. The valve plate is equipped with special stainless steel valves to ensure high output and extreme resistance to material fatigue and damage. Compressors with belt drive are supplied either as single- or two-stage. In the second case the air is first compressed in the first stage, then cooled and further compressed in the second stage, which makes it possible to achieve extreme performance. This type of compressor is intended for very demanding applications and is ideal for demanding craftspeople and small industrial businesses.

Every part supplied for your machine by the manufacturer is marked with the appropriate logo and you as a customer have one hundred per cent certainty that you have really been supplied with an original part and not its substitute or a counterfeit, which may cause repeated problems with the machine and shorten its service life, or show up in a reduction of the output of the machine.
