Equipment for Microbreweries and Winemakers: Guide to Food-Grade Hoses, Stainless Steel Fittings, and Clean Air
Brewing beer and making wine is an art based on science, precision, and the corresponding purity of the product. Whether you are setting up a new microbrewery or upgrading a family winery, top-quality ingredients are not enough for a perfect result. You must keep in mind that the path of your product from mashing or pressing to kegging and bottling must be absolutely sterile.
That's why in this article we will look at the key elements of operation: how to properly manage compressed air, which hoses to choose, and why stainless steel fittings are an investment that will save many batches and a lot of worries. Because we have been selling this range for years, we know exactly what requirements each application has, so you can perfectly fine-tune your operation down to the last fitting and hose.

Air Treatment for the Food Industry: What Does the Legislation Say?
Compressed air from a compressor is one of the driving forces in breweries and wineries. It is used for aerating wort, pushing beer or wine through pipes, washing kegs, and bottling. But here comes a critical moment – the air comes into direct contact with the food, and its absolute safety for humans is crucial.
Legislation (based on EU standards and the ISO 8573-1 standard) is therefore uncompromising in this regard. Air that touches your product must not contain mechanical impurities, moisture, bacteria, and above all, no oil. Even a microscopic drop of compressor oil can destroy the flavor profile of wine or irreversibly "kill" beer foam.
How to Achieve This? You Have Two Options:
- ✅ Oil-free compressor instead of a classic oil-lubricated machine: The ideal choice. It contains no oil in the compression chamber from the factory, making the risk of contamination zero. You get absolute peace of mind and trouble-free operation. Moreover, modern oil-free compressors are much more durable and powerful than their predecessors.
- 🔹 Oil-lubricated compressor + multi-stage filtration: If you already have a classic compressor, it doesn't matter. But complete air treatment is crucial for you. For everything to run without a trace of oil, you will need a set of filters: from a coarse pre-filter, through a microfilter, to an activated carbon filter that catches the last odors. A sterile bacteriological filter is installed right before entering the beverage. With this solution, you smartly upgrade your existing equipment with lower initial costs.
Stainless Steel Ball Valves vs. Ordinary Ones: Not All Valves Are Created Equal
Customers often ask us: "Why should I buy a more expensive stainless steel valve when the ordinary brass one from your offer costs a fraction of the price and withstands the same pressure?"
The difference is not in pressure, but in hygiene, chemical resistance, and the absolute safety of your product. Brewery and winery pipeline sanitation (the so-called CIP process – Clean-In-Place) uses aggressive acids and lyes at high temperatures.

Property Comparison: Brass vs. Stainless Steel Valve
| Property | Ordinary Brass/Nickel-Plated Valve | Stainless Steel Ball Valve (AISI 304 / 316) |
|---|---|---|
| Reaction to Sanitation | Lye and acids gradually eat away the surface treatment. | 100% resistant to aggressive chemicals and hot steam. (Extreme lifespan) |
| Impact on Taste | Brass can release metallic off-flavors (copper/zinc) into the beverage. | Completely taste-neutral and inert material for a premium result. |
| Risk of Deposits | Rougher internal surface after corrosion is a paradise for bacteria. | Smooth, polished surface prevents yeast settlement. |
Where Do Different Valves Belong in a Brewery and Winery?
- ✔️ On product lines (beer, mash, wine): Use exclusively stainless steel fittings here. Ideal are stainless steel butterfly valves or special three-piece sanitary ball valves. They can be easily disassembled and cleaned – avoiding "dead zones" where product can get stuck and rot in standard valves.
- ✔️ On sanitation lines (CIP): Here, stainless steel 316 (more resistant to acids) is an absolute must to ensure the long-term functionality of the entire system.
- ✔️ On compressed air, cooling water, or glycol lines: The product does not flow through here. You can safely reach for cheaper brass or nickel-plated valves and significantly reduce the implementation budget.
Food-Grade Hoses for Beer/Wine: It Won't Flow Through a Garden Hose
While stainless steel pipes are rigid, connecting tanks, pumps, and fillers requires flexibility. Food-grade hoses for beer and wine from our offer are designed to handle three main challenges: pressure, temperature, and maximum hygiene.
Don't forget that the right hose must have certification for food contact (e.g., FDA). Such a hose has a perfectly smooth inner tube (mostly EPDM rubber or special polymers) that does not absorb odors and does not color your product. A major advantage is that, besides cold media, it can easily withstand sanitary flushing with boiling water (commonly up to 95 °C) or even steam cleaning processes.

Stop: Definitely Do Not Buy These for Food Operations
To avoid ruined batches and heavy fines from food authorities, beware of these common mistakes:
- ❌ Garden and technical PVC hoses for products: They contain phthalates and plasticizers. Alcohol acts as an excellent solvent and will "pull" these substances right into your beer or wine. Furthermore, upon contact with hot water, the hose softens, cracks, or simply smells like plastic.
- ❌ Galvanized pipes and fittings: Acids in beer and wine dissolve zinc quickly. Zinc is toxic, unacceptable for the food industry, and immediately ruins the taste.
- ❌ Compressors without separators and filters: Blowing air straight from a cheap workshop compressor (where water condenses mixed with rust and oil) into a fermentation vessel is a reliable way to pour the entire batch straight down the drain.
Your technology should be of the same quality as the ingredients you put into it. The right choice of hoses, stainless steel fittings, and absolutely clean air will guarantee that exactly the delicious result you created with love reaches the customer.
