The 1.5 mm nozzle belongs to the versatile middle sizes that find use wherever a higher paint flow is needed. Compared with smaller diameters (the 1.4 mm nozzle, common for fine painting, for example), the 1.5 mm nozzle copes better with thicker coatings – from high-build primers to fillers and synthetic enamels. At the same time it still produces a relatively fine spray, so it can also be used for some top coats if the situation calls for it. This combination of output and still-good atomisation makes the 1.5 mm nozzle a popular choice in industrial painting and among more demanding DIY users.

Examples of use for the 1.5 mm nozzle:

• Industrial painting of large areas and structures: fast application of a heavy coat over extensive surfaces (steel structures, machines), where productivity and coating durability come first.
• Priming and fillers: spraying high-build primers onto metal or wooden substrates and applying fillers (on bodywork, for example). The 1.5 mm nozzle lets the material be applied evenly without excessive thinning.
• Synthetic enamels and high-solids paints: applying thicker top coats with a high solids content (synthetic enamels on machine parts, agricultural machinery and the like), where a smaller nozzle might not deliver a smooth heavy layer.

Recommended working pressure:
For guns fitted with a 1.5 mm nozzle, a working pressure of about 2–3 bar is usually recommended (depending on the gun type and paint viscosity). On an HVLP system, for instance, around 2 bar at the gun inlet is common (to reach about 0.7 bar at the nozzle), while conventional spray guns may work best at ~3–4 bar. Setting the pressure correctly ensures fine atomisation even of thicker paint and minimises "spitting" or imperfect droplet break-up.

Advantages over the 1.4 mm nozzle:
Compared with the smaller 1.4 mm nozzle, the 1.5 mm offers several practical benefits. Above all it can apply thicker materials without heavy thinning – a smaller nozzle could clog or fail to atomise thick paint properly. Thanks to its higher flow, the 1.5 mm nozzle speeds up work when covering larger areas and applies a heavier coat in a single pass. At the same time, the difference in spray fineness compared with 1.4 mm is minimal, so the finish stays smooth and uniform.

Alternatives and comparison with 1.7 mm:
If you need to spray even extremely thick materials or achieve a genuinely heavy coat, a larger diameter such as the 1.7 mm nozzle is available. It is used mainly for highly viscous fillers, high-solids 2K lacquers and other special applications requiring maximum flow. For most ordinary purposes, though, the 1.7 mm nozzle may be unnecessarily large – 1.5 mm is the ideal compromise, combining decent spray fineness with enough output for thicker paints. Choosing a spray gun with a 1.5 mm nozzle therefore gives you a versatile tool covering a wide range of painting work.
