Using the 1.7 mm nozzle for thick paints and 2K systems

These include, for example, high-solids primers and body fillers, two-component (2K) epoxy and polyurethane coatings, or even special sprayable putties. When working with these materials, the larger nozzle diameter makes it possible to lay a thick layer at once, which is an advantage when priming rougher surfaces – that is, the first coat on less smooth or porous substrates where the surface must be evened out and imperfections filled. Thanks to the higher flow volume, a gun with a 1.7 mm nozzle applies thick paint smoothly and without interruption, with no clogging of the gun or uneven coverage.

Using a 1.7 mm nozzle results in an even coat of a heavier material layer. That is ideal for subsequent sanding and further coats of clearcoat in the paint shop (in vehicle repairs, for instance), or for creating a durable base layer in industrial coatings. Recommended pressure and comparison of the 1.7 mm nozzle with 1.5 mm and 1.8 mm

For spray guns with a 1.7 mm nozzle a working pressure of around 2 bar is usually recommended (on HVLP systems), or as instructed by the maker of the particular gun. This pressure ensures optimal atomisation of thick materials – too low a pressure could lead to coarse droplets and uneven coverage, while needlessly high pressure would cause excessive overspray and misting of paint away from the target. Advantages of 1.7 mm over 1.5 mm: The larger 1.7 mm nozzle lays a heavier layer faster and without excessive thinning of the paint. The smaller 1.5 mm nozzle (common for general use or finishing), by contrast, can struggle with very thick materials – the material might atomise less well, the gun could clog, or the paint would have to be thinned more, which reduces its opacity and filling ability. So if you plan to spray mainly fillers and other thick coatings, the 1.7 mm will give you higher work efficiency and a more even, defect-free surface.

The 1.8 mm alternative: The 1.8 mm nozzle is very close to the 1.7 mm variant and is often used for the same purposes – spraying primers, fillers and heavy paint layers. Against 1.7 mm it offers a marginally higher paint flow, which can be an advantage with extremely viscous materials or when you need to apply the thickest possible layer in a single step. The difference between 1.7 and 1.8 mm is not significant, though; both nozzles fall into the „larger diameter“ category for thick materials. For most ordinary applications 1.7 mm is entirely sufficient as the ideal compromise between output and spray quality, while 1.8 mm may be chosen if an even higher flow is specifically needed. If, on the other hand, you needed a finer spray for thinner coatings, smaller diameters are available, such as the 1.5 mm mentioned above or even 1.3 mm for topcoats.
