Using the 2.2 mm nozzle – strength, durability, output

A spray gun fitted with a 2.2 mm nozzle is meant for operations that need to apply high-viscosity, filled coatings – materials that ordinary nozzles cannot handle without flow problems. This nozzle type is used above all where:

an exceptionally heavy layer must be applied,
texture or pronounced surface irregularities have to be covered,
materials are so thick or fibrous that a smaller diameter cannot atomise them adequately.

Typical examples are fibre-filled putties (polyester with glass fibre, for instance), gel coats, high-strength fillers, waterproof coatings (elastomeric, for example) or industrial epoxies for both base and final layers on structures.

Where will you use the 2.2 mm nozzle?

Structures and technical surfaces: ideal for priming steel load-bearing structures, machine frames or components that need a dependable heavy coat.
Vehicle underbodies and chassis parts: used for spraying vehicle underbodies, wheel arches, frames and bumpers with special compounds resistant to abrasion, grit and salt.
Sealing and waterproof layers: used when spraying bitumen coatings, waterproofing compounds or damping lacquers in the automotive and construction industries.
Spray putties: for rough body repairs where pronounced irregularities must be covered – especially when filling deeper defects or sanded joints after repairs.

Pressure and settings

When spraying very thick coatings with a 2.2 mm nozzle, a working pressure of around 2–3 bar is recommended on HVLP guns and 3–4 bar on conventional systems. You need a capable compressor and a sufficiently wide hose so that flow does not drop. It is also important to filter the material thoroughly, because even small particles can clog this nozzle.

Compared with the 2.0 mm and 2.5 mm nozzles

Compared with the 2.0 mm nozzle, the 2.2 mm passes material slightly more freely – ideal for fibrous compounds or mixes with a high solid particle content. If you need to go further still (bitumen- or PVC-based putties, textured layers), the 2.5 mm nozzle is available. That one, however, demands considerable experience – overspray can occur if pressure or distance is not set correctly.
