    Safety valves certified TÜV-SV746 D/G

What does TÜV certification mean and why does it matter?

TÜV is the brand of the independent German technical inspection organisations (Technischer Überwachungsverein), which focus on the safety of products and their compliance with European and international standards. In the field of pressure equipment such as safety valves, TÜV certification is an important guarantee that the valve in question:

    • has passed tests of tightness, setting accuracy and overall reliability,
    • has been tested at real operating pressures,
    • meets the requirements of the PED 2014/68/EU directive for pressure equipment,
    • is suitable for use in pressure systems throughout the EU and beyond.

The TÜV certificate is therefore an internationally recognised mark of quality and safety. Safety valves with this certification have verified properties and are usually supplied with a set-pressure test report. The valves we offer hold the relevant TÜV certificates and test records, so you can install them safely in your pressure system straight away.

What does the TÜV-SV746 D/G certification type stand for?

The TÜV-SV746 D/G certification denotes a specific type approval of safety valves for:

    • Gaseous media – primarily compressed air (the "D" marking, from Druckluft) and inert gases (the "G" marking, from Gase, e.g. nitrogen, argon or CO₂),
    • A spring-loaded design with free discharge – standard spring-loaded safety valves, usually with a threaded connection and an open outlet to atmosphere (for rapid venting of overpressure),
    • Standard operating conditions – a typical temperature range of -20 °C to +160 °C, which covers common industrial applications with compressed air and technical gases,
    • Use in pneumatic and gas systems – the certification targets valve applications in compressor stations, compressed air distribution lines and industrial gas systems.

Valves with SV746 D/G certification are most often made of brass for high strength and resistance to compressed air. For more demanding or corrosive environments there are also stainless steel versions. The valve seal is usually made of a high-quality elastomer, typically FPM (Viton), which provides a reliable seal across a wide temperature range and resists oil as well as inert gases. These are typically compact threaded safety valves with connection sizes from roughly G 1/4" to G 1", covering adjustable pressure ranges from fractions of a bar (e.g. 0,2 bar) up to the lower tens of bar (commonly around 10–20 bar, depending on the model). They are suitable, for example, for:

    • Compressors and air tanks – ensuring safe release of overpressure in air receivers and compressor air systems,
    • Compressed air distribution systems – protecting pipework circuits and equipment in industrial plants against exceeding the operating pressure,
    • Industrial inert gas systems – for example nitrogen stations, argon lines or other technical gases in cylinders and apparatus.

In terms of type, these are normal (standard) safety valves as well as full-lift valves with this certification, which means they can release overpressure to atmosphere quickly and reliably as soon as the pressure reaches the set value. This protects the equipment from damage and the operator from the risk of a vessel bursting due to excessive pressure.

Advantages of valves with TÜV-SV746 D/G certification

    • Precise set pressure: Each valve is individually set to the required pressure and sealed, which guarantees that it opens accurately at that value.
    • Verified reliability and tightness: The valves have passed strict tests to TÜV standards. You can rely on them to open reliably when needed and to close tightly again once the pressure drops, without leaking media in normal operation.
    • Easy regulatory approval: Using valves with this certification makes it easier to meet legal requirements (the PED directive, for example) during inspections of pressure vessels and equipment. Thanks to TÜV certification, you have all the documentation ready for authorities and inspectors.

    • International usability: TÜV certification is recognised across the EU and worldwide, and the valves carry a standardised nameplate. This allows them to be used in different countries without complications with local standards.
    • Optimised for air and gas: Thanks to their specialisation in gaseous media, these safety valves are designed for a fast response and sufficient flow when discharging compressed air or gas. They therefore reduce system pressure effectively at exactly the moment it is needed.

    Selection recommendations

We recommend choosing valves with this certification for:

    • Systems requiring official TÜV type approval: For example pressure vessels and compressor stations subject to regular inspections – inspectors often require the safety valve to hold a valid TÜV certification.
    • Equipment handling media such as air, nitrogen or CO₂: If you work with compressed air or inert gases in any industrial process, the TÜV-SV746 D/G valve is a sound choice for safety.
    • Users who need full documentation and a guarantee of function: For a safety audit or ISO certification in the company, for instance, using a TÜV-certified valve with a setting report is clear evidence that safety standards are being met.
    • Operations that emphasise traceability: Every TÜV valve carries a unique marking and can be traced through its certificate. In environments where component traceability matters (food processing, pharma or the chemical industry, for example), you will appreciate the clear identification and record-keeping of the valve.

When choosing a specific safety valve, check not only the required certification but also the correct set pressure, body material and connection type (thread or flange) so that the valve suits your operation. A detailed guide to the selection process can be found in our advice article How to choose the right safety valve.

    Related certifications and products

Our e-shop also offers other safety valves with various types of TÜV certification, for example:

    • TÜV-SV.1048 – a universal certification for liquids and gases (suitable for air, water, oils and more),
    • TÜV-SV581-F – certification suited above all to liquids, including water and oils,
    • TÜV-SV749D/G – type approval for gaseous and liquid media including technical gases (combined usability),
    • TÜV-SV1090 S/G – certification intended for special high-pressure applications (e.g. for steam or very high pressures).
