When to replace the cartridge
- the water at the separator outlet contains more oil than you are allowed to discharge – check it with test strips or with a turbidity test according to the separator manual
- the cartridge is saturated with oil or clogged and condensate no longer flows through the separator
- the replacement interval stated by the separator manufacturer has passed – even a cartridge that is not exhausted cannot stay in service indefinitely
How to replace the cartridge
- Close the condensate inlet to the separator, or wait until the compressor is not running.
- Remove the used cartridge and let it drip off over the separator.
- Pack the cartridge in a strong plastic bag. It is hazardous waste – filter material contaminated with oil (European Waste Catalogue code 15 02 02*) – and must be handed over to an authorised waste company, not put in municipal waste.
- Insert the new cartridge according to the separator manual. If the manual requires it, fill the separator with clean water after the replacement.
- Do not reuse a cartridge that has already been in service – even after drying it will not reliably capture oil.

ATS s.r.l. (Air Treatment Solutions) is an Italian manufacturer of compressed air treatment equipment based in Legnago in the province of Verona. It makes refrigeration and adsorption dryers, filters and OWS Gold series oil-water separators, which separate oil from compressor condensate.
From ATS we offer original cartridges for the OWS 170, 510, 1275, 2550 and 3600 separators you already operate. The OWS separator captures oil in a synthetic pre-filter and an activated carbon bag – with regular bag replacement, the water flows out with an oil content below 10 ppm.

The air flow applies to the manufacturer’s nominal conditions: ambient temperature 25 °C, pressure 7 bar, screw compressor. In warmer and more humid conditions the manufacturer recommends a larger separator. The separator operates at ambient temperatures of 5 to 45 °C.
Replacing the cartridge in an OWS separator
1. Identify the type
You will find the separator type on the rating plate – OWS 170, 510, 1275, 2550 or 3600. Use it to choose the cartridge in the table above.
2. Check the water
Check the water at the separator outlet regularly. When it contains more oil than you are allowed to discharge, it is time to replace the bags.
3. Replace the bags
Close the condensate inlet, remove the used bags and let them drip off over the separator. Insert the new ones according to the separator manual.
4. Hand over for disposal
Used bags are hazardous waste – filter material contaminated with oil (15 02 02*). Pack them in a strong bag and hand them over to an authorised waste company.

- What does the cartridge contain?
- It is a replacement set of filter bags from ATS. The OWS separator cleans the condensate in two stages: a synthetic pre-filter captures oil and solid particles and protects the carbon, and an activated carbon bag captures the remaining oil.
- How clean is the water leaving the separator?
- The manufacturer states an oil content below 10 ppm if the bags are replaced regularly. Whether you may discharge the water into the sewer is decided by the sewer operator or by local regulations – please check.
- Can an OWS separator handle condensate with synthetic oil?
- According to the manufacturer, yes – OWS Gold series separators are also designed for new synthetic oils that cannot be separated from water by settling. With synthetic oil, however, they handle a lower air flow than with mineral oil.
