Uses for the 0.2 mm nozzle

The 0.2 mm nozzle is among the smallest diameters in the range of spray guns for paint shops and tradespeople, and is therefore intended for the finest applications. It excels at atomising very thin layers of paint or lacquer with minimal surface coverage. It finds use when applying delicate decorative paints, spraying thin-film lacquers or stains, and in situations where a small quantity of material must be dosed precisely. This diameter is typical of airbrush guns and small detail spray guns used wherever a brush or a larger nozzle cannot deliver the accuracy required.

Examples of use

• Modelling: ideal for painting models with fine detail (plastic aircraft or car kits, figurines). The 0.2 mm nozzle allows precise spraying of camouflage, shading and other small elements without obscuring fine detail.
• Fine graphics: airbrush art and graphic work requiring thin lines and soft colour transitions. When creating illustrations, retouching or decorating objects (helmets, guitars and the like), the 0.2 mm nozzle suits detail work with maximum control over the sprayed line.
• Marking: precise marking and labelling of small areas. In industry or craft production, a nozzle this fine can apply small colour marks, lines or codes to products and components without the paint bleeding beyond the intended spot.

Pressure setting and air cleanliness

With a nozzle this small, the correct air pressure setting and the quality of the paint used matter greatly. Lower pressure is usual (about 1–2 bar), giving a fine mist without excessive spatter. The paint should be adequately thinned and carefully filtered, because even a tiny contaminant can block a 0.2 mm nozzle. For stable pressure it is advisable to use a compressor with a precise regulator and a water-separating filter – clean, dry air is essential for an even spray. A small nozzle also calls for sensitive gun control (ideally a dual-action trigger) so you can dose air and paint precisely.

Alternatives: 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm nozzles

Although the 0.2 mm nozzle offers maximum fineness of atomisation, for some purposes it may be too slow or unsuitable for thicker materials. In that case a spray gun with a larger nozzle diameter can be chosen. A model with a 0.3 mm nozzle, for instance, still gives a very fine spray but handles a higher paint flow thanks to the wider opening. Similarly, a 0.5 mm nozzle allows heavier layers and faster coverage of medium-sized areas – while still belonging to the detail nozzle category. These alternatives suit you if you need to work faster or apply thicker coatings while keeping a relatively fine spray.
