API (Advanced Pneumatic Industries) is an Italian manufacturer of pneumatic components. The company was founded in the late 1980s near Milan and since the turn of the millennium it has designed and built its own valves and cylinders.
We offer API cylinders from round to compact types, mountings and piston rod accessories, grippers, shock absorbers, and solenoid, air-operated, manual and foot valves. API makes its cylinders, valves and accessories from aluminium, steel and stainless steel.
Italian brandWhat we offer from API
Round cylinders ISO 6432
Small cylinders for lighter work. Single-acting MS and double-acting MD cylinders with crimped end caps.
- bore 8 to 25 mm
- magnetic and stainless MDX versions
- supplied with nuts on the threads
Profile cylinders ISO 15552
Cylinders for larger forces. Double-acting cylinders with a magnetic piston and adjustable end-position cushioning.
- AMA, bore 32 to 125 mm
- AMT, bore 160 to 320 mm
- stainless AMX
Compact cylinders
Short cylinders for tight spaces. Cylinders to ISO 21287 and UNITOP with slots for position sensors.
- CI to ISO 21287, bore 16 to 125 mm
- CS and CD to UNITOP, 12 to 100 mm
- GED with guided piston rod
Mountings and rod accessories
The mounting decides how the cylinder sits. Feet, flanges, rear eyes and clevises to the cylinder standard.
- for ISO 15552, ISO 6432, UNITOP and CNOMO
- in aluminium, steel and stainless steel
- rod clevises, rod eyes and flexible couplings
Pneumatic grippers
Grip a part and release it. Angular, parallel and three-jaw grippers with a magnet for a sensor.
- angular PAB and PAC, bore 10 to 32 mm
- parallel PPB and PPC
- three-jaw PPE, bore 25 to 63 mm
Shock absorbers
A soft stop at the end position. A shock absorber damps the impact at the end of linear and rotary motion.
- adjustable MA absorbers
- self-adjusting MC absorbers
- thread M5 to M25 with lock nut
Solenoid and air-operated valves
Control cylinders electrically or by air. A solenoid valve is switched by a coil, an air-operated valve by a pressure signal.
- A1E with 1/8″, 1/4″ and 1/2″ thread
- ISO 5599/1 and NAMUR
- 3/2, 5/2 and 5/3 functions
Manual and foot valves
Operated by hand or foot. A1MA lever, push-button and mushroom valves and AVP and ACP foot valves.
- 3/2, 5/2 and 5/3 functions
- A1MA with 1/8″ thread, 0 to 10 bar
- AVP pedals with yellow guard

Mountings are chosen by the cylinder standard: parts for ISO 15552, UNITOP and CNOMO have different hole spacing and are not interchangeable.
How to choose a cylinder and valve
1. Force and stroke
Work out how much force the cylinder must push with and how long a stroke you need. The thrust at 6 bar is listed in the table of each series category.
2. Size and standard
Round ISO 6432 cylinders are for smaller forces, ISO 15552 profile cylinders for larger ones. Where space is tight, choose a compact cylinder.
3. Valve
A single-acting cylinder is controlled by a 3/2 valve, a double-acting one by a 5/2 valve. A 5/3 valve with closed centre position stops the cylinder mid-stroke.
4. Mounting and sensor
Choose the mounting by the cylinder standard and by whether the cylinder may pivot while moving. A cylinder with a magnet can then be monitored by a position sensor.
Frequently asked questions
- Do A1E valves come with a coil and connector?
- No, A1E valves are supplied without a coil and connector. Order an ASA12 coil with the voltage of your control system and an A12209 connector.
- What is the difference between single and double-acting cylinders?
- A single-acting cylinder pushes with air in one direction only and uses less air. A double-acting cylinder moves by air in both directions, so it can also handle longer strokes.
- Which position sensor fits an API cylinder?
- ASV and ASC sensors with LED mount directly in the cylinder slots. On round cylinders use the AFM sensor bracket, on ISO 15552 cylinders the AS bracket. The cylinder must have a magnetic piston.
- Does API also make ATEX versions?
- Yes, API also supplies versions for explosive atmospheres (ATEX) and assembles valve terminals to order. They are not listed on our website; send us a message and we will prepare a quote.
- Do round cylinders come with nuts?
- Yes, MS and MD round cylinders to ISO 6432 are supplied with nuts on the threads. Their end caps are crimped onto the barrel.
Dimensions, forces and pressures of each series are listed in the table in its category. API’s quality system holds ISO 9001, ICIM, CISQ and IQNet certificates. Series names (AMA, CI, A1E, A1MA …) are designations of the manufacturer API.
