Product detailed description

The ÖWAMAT 11 oil-water separator from the manufacturer BEKO purifies condensate from compressors with a capacity of 2.8 to 4.9 m³/min. The condensate settles in the 18.6 l container and flows through the two-stage OEKOSORB filter element; the water flowing out contains no more than 20 mg/l of oil.

It belongs to the ÖWAMAT separator series. For smaller compressors there are WOSM separators, for larger ones WOS separators.

How it works

Functional diagram of the ÖWAMAT oil-water separator: inlet, pressure relief chamber, OEKOSORB filter element, riser duct and outlet
Cross-section of the ÖWAMAT 10 / 11 separator – the letters and numbers correspond to the description alongside.
  1. [A] The condensate flows through the G½ hose connection into the pressure relief chamber [7]. The air in the condensate escapes at the top through the cover and the condensate settles.
  2. [3] The feed pipe guides the condensate down into the OEKOSORB filter element [6] without turbulence.
  3. The condensate flows through the prefilter and the main filter of the element. The filter material binds the oil, the water passes through.
  4. [8] The purified water rises through the riser duct and flows out through the outlet [B]. The oil stays in the element.
  5. [C] Use the service valve to take a water sample for the turbidity test. [15] On the ÖWAMAT 11, the level indicator shows that the element is clogged.

Filter element

The replacement filter element kit for the ÖWAMAT 11 is O11 – an OEKOSORB filter element with a filter mat. The element captures up to 1.8 kg of oil.

The level indicator in the pressure relief chamber shows with a red marking that the element is clogged and it is time to replace it. An alarm sensor with a potential-free contact and frost protection heating can be added as options.

Replace the element as soon as the first of these situations occurs:

  • the turbidity test fails – the sample is more turbid than the reference tube
  • on the ÖWAMAT 11, the red marking appears in the level indicator
  • the calculated service life of the element, based on compressor operation, has elapsed
  • after 12 months at the latest

Checking the water

  • once a week, take a water sample from the service valve and compare it with the reference turbidity tube
  • the tube corresponds to 20 mg/l of oil; the manufacturer also supplies tubes for 10 and 5 mg/l
  • record the result in the operating log and at the same time check that nothing has damaged the separator
  • have expert maintenance carried out every 6 months; clean the container once a year and at every element replacement

Installation

  • install the separator indoors, protected from frost and direct sunlight
  • operating temperature of the condensate and surroundings +5 to +60 °C, ambient relative humidity max. 80 %
  • feed the condensate through up to 2 G½ inlets (hose ⌀ 10 mm), inlet pressure max. 16 bar – ideally from level-controlled drains that do not stir up the condensate
  • the purified water drains by gravity through a ⌀ 10 mm hose; before first start-up, fill the separator with clean tap water
  • the separator is only intended for condensate from compressors with dispersed oil; it does not separate a stable emulsion (milky condensate that does not separate even after a long time)

Scope of delivery

  • separator with the OEKOSORB filter element fitted
  • reference turbidity tube
  • wall bracket and fixing materials
  • installation and operation manual

Condensate is fed into the separator by automatic condensate drains.

BEKO TECHNOLOGIES of Neuss, Germany, was founded by Berthold Koch in 1982 and is still an independent family business with quality management to EN ISO 9001:2015. It specialises in compressed air condensate: it makes BEKOMAT condensate drains, ÖWAMAT separators and BEKOSPLIT emulsion splitting units.

From BEKO we offer the ÖWAMAT 10 and 11 oil-water separators and the matching OEKOSORB filter sets. The separator removes oil from the condensate without electricity, purely by gravity, and the water flowing out contains no more than 20 mg/l of oil. You then only dispose of the used filter element, not all the condensate.

Capacity and element service life apply to the manufacturer’s reference conditions: 30 °C, 70 % relative humidity, 7 bar. In warm, humid surroundings more condensate forms, so the separator can only handle a smaller compressor.

How to install and maintain an ÖWAMAT separator

1. Choose the size

Add up the capacity of all compressors whose condensate will flow into the separator. The ÖWAMAT 10 is enough up to 2.4 m³/min, the ÖWAMAT 11 up to 4.9 m³/min.

2. Connect

Install the separator indoors, protected from frost and sunlight. Feed the condensate through up to two G½ inlets, ideally from level-controlled condensate drains.

3. Fill with water

Before first start-up, fill the separator with clean tap water. The purified water then drains by gravity.

4. Check and replace

Once a week, compare a water sample with the turbidity tube. Replace the element when the sample is cloudier, when the ÖWAMAT 11 indicator shows it, or after 12 months at the latest.

Frequently asked questions

Does the ÖWAMAT need electricity?
No. The condensate flows through by gravity. Only the optional ÖWAMAT 11 accessories need electricity – the alarm sensor for the level indicator and the frost protection heating.
How do I know the filter element is exhausted?
From the turbidity test: compare a sample from the service valve with the reference tube supplied with the separator. If it is more turbid, replace the element. The ÖWAMAT 11 also shows this on its level indicator. Replace the element after 12 months at the latest.
May I discharge the purified water into the sewer?
ÖWAMAT purifies the condensate to an oil content of no more than 20 mg/l and has the German DIBt approval Z-83.5-9. Whether you may discharge the water is decided by the sewer operator or by local regulations – please check this.
Can the ÖWAMAT handle any condensate?
Only compressor condensate in which the oil is dispersed. It cannot separate a stable emulsion – milky condensate that does not separate even after a long time. With synthetic oils the capacity may differ; the manufacturer recommends having a condensate sample tested.
Can I still get filter sets for an older ÖWAMAT 12?
Yes. The manufacturer stopped making the ÖWAMAT 12 in September 2023 but still supplies filter sets for it. The O12 set fits the ÖWAMAT 12 with and without pre-separation.
What comes with the separator?
The separator with the OEKOSORB filter element fitted, the reference turbidity tube, a wall bracket with fixing material and the installation and operating manual.

A Czech technical data sheet is available for download with every product, and the ÖWAMAT 10 and 11 separators and the O10 and O11 sets also come with the manufacturer’s manual in Czech. The O12 set comes with the ÖWAMAT 12–16 manual in German, English, French and Dutch. BEKO®, ÖWAMAT®, OEKOSORB®, BEKOMAT® and BEKOSPLIT® are registered trademarks of BEKO TECHNOLOGIES GmbH.
