Product detailed description
WALTER WK550-4,0/200P Cast Iron Piston Compressor
The WK550-4,0/200P is a balanced mid-range option in the three-kilowatt class: a 3W cast-iron triple-cylinder with a power input of 3.0 kW, an intake of 530 l/min, and an effective displacement of 440 l/min at 10 bar, with unit speeds of 1,202 rpm. It features a 200 l horizontal receiver, three-phase 400 V / 50 Hz power supply, noise levels of approx. 80 dB(A), and a 3-year warranty upon registration at waltercesko.cz.
The 200 l receiver, paired with a 530 l/min intake, falls within the recommended reserve-to-performance ratio (165 to 275 l), making this model the first horizontal configuration in its class where the receiver size truly matches the unit's output. The result is a machine capable of more continuous work: at a constant draw of 200 l/min, the motor switches approximately 16 times per hour, which is half as often as the 100 l version.
Configuration of this machine
Why choose this model
400 litres of free air per cycle means approximately 16 starts per hour at a constant draw of 200 l/min; the 100 l version with the same unit starts about 33 times. Piston compressors wear down based on the number of starts, so this difference impacts service life more than any difference in catalogue numbers.
The rule of thumb suggests 0.3 to 0.5 litres of tank capacity per 1 l/min of intake. At 530 l/min, the calculation yields 165 to 275 l, and the 200 l volume sits in the lower half of this range — large enough to maintain pressure, yet small enough to be reasonably positioned in a standard workshop.
A pneumatic angle grinder draws 400 to 600 l/min continuously. At a draw of 600 l/min, a unit with a 440 l/min displacement lacks 160 litres per minute — and the 200 l tank covers this deficit for approximately 2.5 minutes of continuous grinding. The 100 l version can handle half of that.
1,202 rpm compared to 1,276 on the 2.2 kW platform is not a dramatic difference, but it follows the trend of the entire range: the larger the machine, the smoother the operation. Lower speeds with a comparable stroke mean a shorter sliding distance for the piston ring per hour of operation and less heat in the compression chamber.
Design and technology

Piston, rings and cast-iron liner
The cast-iron cylinder liner and piston rings are standard service parts — the unit can be refurbished after years of use rather than discarded.

Intake filter with steel mesh
The new generation metal insert withstands repeated blowing out with compressed air, whereas a paper insert would tear after a few cleanings.

Head gaskets and valves
The redesigned cylinder head gaskets maintain pressure even after thermal cycles; valve plates are stocked as spare parts.

Inspection on a 3D measuring machine
Key dimensions of the unit are verified on a coordinate measuring machine — this ensures that parts from different series fit together perfectly.

What the data sheet doesn't tell you — calculated values

Who is it for
It is most commonly purchased by single-bay auto repair shops, smaller body shops, locksmiths, or metal fabrication shops where one person works with compressed air for a significant part of the shift. It is also suitable for joinery workshops using a mix of staplers, grinders, and blow-off guns. It is a versatile workshop machine: powerful enough for most pneumatic tools, large enough to avoid constant cycling, yet remaining manageable in size. However, there is a ceiling for two people working simultaneously — the simultaneous draw of two continuous loads requires a higher class.
Typical applications
- 1/2" impact wrench and blow gun in a single-bay auto service
- Orbital sander or cutter in a body shop
- HVLP spray gun for touch-ups and smaller parts
- Pneumatic clamping, drills and ratchets in metalworking
- Staplers, sanders and blow guns in a joinery
- Fixed air distribution with several outlets for non-simultaneous use
Where to choose a different model
With a 270 l tank, the number of starts at a draw of 200 l/min drops from approximately 16 to 12 per hour, and the reserve increases to 540 litres of free air. It is the same unit, just with the largest tank that WALTER builds for it.
View recommended model →A delivery rate of 440 l/min will cover one tool with a reserve, but not two continuous draws. For the simultaneous use of an impact wrench and a grinder, or for two workstations, upgrade to the four-kilowatt platform with 530 l/min, which also features speeds below 1,000 rpm for the first time.
View recommended model →The entry-level 2.2 kW platform with the same 200 l tank delivers 340 l/min. That is sufficient for blow guns, staplers, ratchets and impact wrenches — but not for continuous sanding and painting.

Inspections may be carried out by an authorised WALTER service centre or by yourself — provided that original parts and fluids are used and proof of purchase is retained.
3 year WALTER warranty

36 months after registration at waltercesko.cz
The warranty is provided by Walter Kompressortechnik Česko s.r.o. (Ostrava). Machine registration extends the warranty to 36 months from the date of purchase; proof of purchase is required to claim the warranty.
- Claim assessment within 14 working days, approved repairs free of charge and completed within 30 days
- After 4 repairs and a further defect, you are entitled to a replacement of the machine with a fault-free one
- You may perform the prescribed inspections yourself — using original parts and providing proof of purchase
Transport and Commissioning
The machine is delivered on a pallet. Before the first start, check the oil level, direction of rotation, and the tightness of connections; after the first 8 hours of operation, tighten the cylinder head bolts to a torque of 25 Nm. Leave the electrical connection to a professional — for three-phase machines, it is necessary to verify the correct phase sequence.
