Shut-off valves with exhaust for air treatment units

A shut-off valve with exhaust shuts off the compressed air supply to a machine or a branch of the air line and exhausts the outlet downstream. You can then work on the machine or hose without pressure and without switching off the compressor.
Among the air treatment units, these are ball valves of the modular FUTURA range for potentially explosive atmospheres, in four sizes with G 1/4" to 1" threads. They are operated manually, and in the closed position you lock them with a padlock. You will find ordinary shut-off valves for piping among the ball valves.
Shut-off valves by size
Size 0 has its own row: it withstands an inlet of only 12 bar and is not for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. “Inlet up to” is the highest air line pressure; the flow applies to the largest size.
| FUTURA ball valves with exhaust — overview | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Version | Connection | Inlet up to | Flow up to | ATEX |
| Size 0 K014-F | G 1/4" | 12 bar | 2,300 l/min | – |
| Sizes 1, 2 and 4 K…-F | G 1/4"–1" | 16 bar | 25,000 l/min | yes |
Sizes 1, 2 and 4 withstand an inlet of 16 bar and are suitable for potentially explosive atmospheres. The silencer for the exhaust is included.

How the shut-off valve works

The ball valve with exhaust is a 3/2 shut-off valve. When you turn the knob through 90° clockwise, it shuts off the supply and exhausts the outlet downstream through a silencer. Without a silencer, the exhaust is very loud.
After the supply is shut off, pressure can remain in the air line after the regulator. The valve with exhaust releases it, so you can work on the machine or hose without pressure.
Locking during maintenance

In the closed position, you pull out the locking plate and hang a padlock on it, up to three. Everyone who works on the machine can lock it with their own, and nobody can turn the air on until they have finished the work.
The VHS20 padlock fits it. You will find it among the spare parts and accessories together with mounting brackets and connection kits.
Where to place the shut-off valve
The ball valve goes at the start of the unit, before the soft-start valve and the filter. Mount it in the direction of the arrow on the body. You connect it to other components of the same size with a connection kit regardless of the thread, and to a wall with a mounting bracket.
With a lubricator, replace the silencer on the exhaust with a filter silencer; oil mist is harmful to health.
When the machine control is to switch the air on and off, use a 3/2 switching valve operated by a coil or by air instead of the manual valve. It also exhausts the outlet when switched off.
Potentially explosive atmospheres
Ball valves in sizes 1, 2 and 4 are mechanical devices with no ignition source of their own. According to the declaration regarding Directive 2014/34/EU, you can use them in zones 1 and 2 (gases IIA, IIB, IIC) and 21 and 22 (dust IIIA, IIIB), temperature class T4, under the conditions described for the entire FUTURA range. Size 0 is not for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Ventilek’s tip
Before maintenance: shut off, exhaust and lock. The ball valve with exhaust does this with one turn and a padlock. Until someone unlocks it, it does not let air into the machine.
- How is the shut-off valve operated?
- Manually, by turning the knob through 90° clockwise. The supply is shut off and the outlet exhausted.
- How many padlocks can be hung on it?
- Up to three. The VHS20 padlock fits it.
- Is the silencer included?
- Yes, in the exhaust thread. After a lubricator, replace it with a filter silencer.
- Where does the valve go in the unit?
- At the start, before the soft-start valve and the filter.
- What pressure can the valve take?
- 0–16 bar at the inlet, size 0 0–12 bar.
- Is it suitable for potentially explosive atmospheres?
- Sizes 1, 2 and 4 are, according to the declaration regarding Directive 2014/34/EU. Size 0 is not.
