Pressure vessels and air receivers for 16 bar

Pressure vessels and air receivers for a working pressure of 16 bar for compressors that cut out above 10 bar — 19 vessels from 270 to 10000 litres. The vertical ones come painted and hot-dip galvanised, most of them also with the ALM internal coating; the horizontal ones are painted.
A 16-bar pressure vessel has thicker walls than a vessel of the same size for 11 or 12 bar. It belongs with compressors with a higher working pressure, for example on long air networks with a large pressure drop or for machines that need more than 10 bar. You will find vessels for lower pressures and further volumes in our main category of air receivers and pressure vessels.

The table shows the design, finish and medium of each vessel and the category where you will find it. The dimensions and connections are on the vessel’s product page.

16 bar pressure vessel: which compressor it suits
The pressure on the vessel’s data plate must always be at least as high as the maximum pressure the compressor delivers into it. Vessels for 11 or 12 bar suit compressors up to 10 bar, while a compressor that cuts out higher needs a 16-bar vessel. For volumes from 1000 l, a compressor that cuts out at no more than 11 bar can also make do with a 12-bar vessel.
Choose a safety valve set above the compressor’s cut-out pressure and no higher than 16 bar, with a flow capacity at least as large as the amount of air the compressor delivers. Choose a pressure gauge with a range above the vessel’s working pressure. There are no ready-made fittings kits or fully equipped vessels for 16 bar: their safety valve opens at 10.5 bar, and with a higher-pressure compressor it would blow off every time the compressor pumps up to pressure.
Vertical or horizontal, and which finish
The vertical 16-bar vessels have volumes from 270 to 10000 l, the horizontal ones 270, 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 l. A vertical vessel saves floor space, while a horizontal one suits places where height is lacking. How large a vessel to choose based on the compressor output and air demand is shown in our advice centre on choosing a pressure vessel.
All 16-bar vessels are made painted in blue RAL 5015, with bare steel inside, for dry, heated rooms. The vertical ones are also made hot-dip galvanised inside and out for damp conditions, and most of them with the ALM internal coating for contact with food as well.

Outdoors, in frost and for other gases
Eight of the 16-bar vessels are among the vessels rated down to −20 °C. They have volumes from 1000 to 10000 l, withstand frost as well as air or gas at up to +80 °C and can stand outdoors or in an unheated hall. They are also intended for group 1 fluids except hydrogen, so besides air and nitrogen they can hold argon, helium, oil and even oxygen. With oxygen, the fittings, seals and lubricants must also be designed for oxygen.
Standard vessels from 1000 to 3000 l are designed for −10 to +50 °C. Air from a compressor without an aftercooler tends to be hotter, so install the vessel downstream of a cooler.

Ventilek’s tip
The safety valve is set according to the vessel’s data plate. What counts is the maximum allowable pressure on the data plate, 16 bar for these vessels, not the pressure at which the compressor cuts out.
- When do I need a 16-bar pressure vessel?
- When the compressor cuts out above 10 bar, or above 11 bar for volumes from 1000 l. The vessel must always withstand the maximum pressure the compressor delivers into it.
- Is there a ready-made fittings kit for a 16-bar vessel?
- No. Both the kits and the fully equipped vessels have a safety valve set to 10.5 bar for compressors up to 10 bar. The safety valve, pressure gauge and shut-off valves for 16 bar are chosen separately.
- Are 16-bar vessels also galvanised?
- The vertical ones, yes, all of them. The horizontal 16-bar vessels are made in a painted version only.
- Which directive are the 16-bar vessels manufactured to?
- The 270 and 500 l vessels to the SPVD Directive 2014/29/EU on simple pressure vessels. From 1000 l, the product of pressure and volume exceeds the limit of this directive, so the large vessels comply with the PED 2014/68/EU. Inspection intervals are set by national regulations; an overview for the Czech Republic is in our article on pressure vessel inspections.
Before you order a vessel, check on the compressor’s data plate what pressure it cuts out at. You can choose a compressor to go with the vessel in our overview of air compressors.
