How to choose a 200 l air receiver

The size of the air receiver depends on the compressor output and on how the air demand varies: the more peaks in demand there are, the more it pays to choose a larger vessel. The calculation method is explained in our advice centre on choosing a pressure vessel.

A vertical vessel takes up less floor space; a horizontal one is lower and fits where height is limited. The painted version (RAL 5015 powder coating, bare steel inside) is the standard choice for dry, heated rooms. The hot-dip galvanised version is protected inside and out, so it suits damp conditions and operations with a lot of condensate.

A stainless steel vessel is made entirely of stainless steel and is intended for compressed air, nitrogen and compressed air with water. AISI316L steel with molybdenum is more resistant than AISI304 in aggressive environments with chlorides.

Stand-alone or fully equipped vessel

A stand-alone vessel is delivered without fittings. For operation, it needs a safety valve, a pressure gauge, shut-off valves and a condensate drain. For the vertical 200 l vessel rated for 11 bar, the simplest option is a ready-made kit: KVP200-11 for the painted version and KVG200-11 for the galvanised one. The kit contains a safety valve set to 10.5 bar, a pressure gauge, ball valves for the air inlet and outlet, a condensate drain valve and the mounting hardware, so it suits compressors with a cut-out pressure of up to 10 bar. For the horizontal, stainless steel and high-pressure vessels, the fittings are chosen separately.

The fully equipped vessel VVP2-200-11A has the fittings and the 10.5 bar safety valve already mounted and comes with TÜV certification of the pressure assembly — you only need to connect it to the compressor. For higher pressure, there is the vertical high-pressure vessel VVP200-42 for 42 bar.

Directives and inspections

The painted, galvanised and fully equipped 200 l vessels for 11 bar are manufactured to Directive 2014/29/EU on simple pressure vessels (SPVD), and the stainless steel and high-pressure vessels to Directive 2014/68/EU (PED). Which 200 l air receiver should I choose?

For a dry workshop, a painted vertical or horizontal 11-bar vessel is enough; for damp conditions, a hot-dip galvanised vertical one. For nitrogen or compressed air with water, choose a stainless steel vessel, and for pressures above 16 bar, the high-pressure 42-bar vessel.
