Activated carbon compressed air filters
A microfilter captures oil droplets and aerosol, but lets oil vapour and odours through. Only activated carbon binds them – downstream of it less than 0.005 mg/m³ of oil remains in the compressed air, which meets class 1 for oil according to ISO 8573-1. An activated carbon filter is therefore always installed after a 0.01 µm microfilter, ideally also after the dryer. Where you need an activated carbon filter
Wherever compressed air touches the product or an oil odour would be a problem: food and beverage, packaging, pharmaceuticals, laboratories and electronics. For paint shops there are AAFSA silicone-free filters, for breathing air breathing air filter sets with a catalytic stage for carbon monoxide.

How to choose an activated carbon filter
- Always a microfilter upstream of the same size, with contaminated air also a fine pre-filter. Liquid oil would saturate the carbon quickly.
- Pressure and housing: up to 16 bar the AAF series and flanged BF, up to 25 bar BFHP, up to 50 bar HF, up to 100, 250 and 420 bar the high-pressure CHP and stainless IHP. For food and pharmaceuticals the stainless PF, HPF, SPF and welded WFIT, WFIF, WFIW and WHFIT series.
- Size by the flow at your pressure. The nominal flow applies to the reference pressure; at lower pressure a larger filter is needed – the conversion is on each series page.
- Replace the element by operating hours, not by the indicator. Carbon does not clog, it saturates – the pressure drop does not rise, so a differential pressure gauge will not show when to replace it.
- Temperature: carbon binds vapour best in cool air; most elements are rated up to +45 °C.
