Pressure regulators with filter for compressed air

A pressure regulator with filter cleans compressed air of dirt and water droplets and, in the same body, reduces the air line pressure to the value you set with the knob. Compared with a separate filter and regulator, it saves space and one joint.
Here you will find filter regulators from all 7 ranges of air treatment units: from miniature plastic ones through metal ones for 18 bar and versions for potentially explosive atmospheres to stainless steel up to 60 bar. The table below shows how the ranges differ.
Filter regulators by range
“Inlet up to” is the highest air line pressure the regulator withstands. The setting range is the range to which you can reduce the pressure. The flow applies to the largest thread of the range.
| Pressure regulators with filter — range comparison | |||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Range | Connection | Inlet up to | Setting range | Filtration | Condensate drain | Flow up to | ATEX |
| P2 | G 1/4" | 12 bar | 0–12 bar | 20 µm | manual | 600 l/min | – |
| I3 | G 1/8", 1/4" | 13 bar | 0–8 bar | 20 µm | semi-automatic | 600 l/min | – |
| A2 | G 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 1" | 10 bar | 0.5–8.5 bar | 5 µm | semi-automatic | 7,000 l/min | – |
| B2 | G 1/4"–1" | 18 bar | 0–12 bar | 20 µm | manual | 4,600 l/min | – |
| I8 | G 1/4"–1/2" | 18 bar | 0–12 bar | 20 µm | semi-automatic | 2,500 l/min | – |
| FUTURA | G 1/4"–1" | 12 / 16 bar | 0.1–16 bar | 5 µm | semi-automatic, automatic | 13,000 l/min | some versions |
| A1X | G 1/4", 1/2", 1" | 30 / 60 bar | 0.5–20 bar | 5 µm | semi-automatic | 8,900 l/min | – |
For the FUTURA range, the 12 bar inlet applies to the smallest size 0, which is not for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. On A1X, the G 1/4" thread withstands 30 bar, the larger threads 60 bar.

How the filter regulator works

In the bowl, the air is first set spinning. Centrifugal force throws water droplets and coarse dirt against the wall, and they run down to the bottom of the bowl. The air then passes through the filter element and only then, cleaned, goes into the regulator.
The regulator reduces the pressure to the set value and holds it. When the outlet pressure rises above the set value, it releases the excess by itself.
The filter separates water that has already condensed. It does not trap water vapour — dry air throughout the air line is provided by a compressed air dryer.
How to choose a range
By air line pressure. Up to 10 bar, the A2 range in painted aluminium is enough; the plastic P2 and I3 withstand 12 and 13 bar. For 18 bar, there are the metal B2 and I8, FUTURA is rated for 16 bar and the stainless steel A1X for up to 60 bar.
By filtration fineness. A 5 µm element (A2, FUTURA, A1X) traps finer particles than a 20 µm element (P2, I3, B2, I8). If you need even cleaner air, put a 0.01 µm microfilter after the filter regulator.
By environment. For potentially explosive atmospheres, there are FUTURA filter regulators in sizes 1, 2 and 4. Where aluminium or plastic would corrode — in the food industry, the chemical industry or outdoors — there is the stainless steel A1X range.
By condensate drain. You open the manual drain (P2, B2) yourself. The semi-automatic drain releases the condensate when the pressure in the bowl drops, for example after the supply is shut off. For continuous operation, you can choose an automatic drain on FUTURA.
By location. The plastic P2 and I3 filter regulators are only 40 mm wide.
Filter regulator or complete unit
A filter regulator is enough wherever you do not want oil in the air: for painting, blow-off, the food industry or measuring instruments. When the tools need oil mist, add a lubricator after it, or go straight for a complete air treatment unit.
Choose a separate filter and pressure regulator when you want a different filtration fineness from that of the filter regulator in the given range, or each device at a different point in the air line.
Mounting and maintenance
Mount the filter regulator upright, bowl down, and in the direction of the arrow on the body. In an assembly, it goes before the lubricator.
The filter element gradually clogs and needs replacing; depressurise the regulator before replacing it. You will find elements, bowls and other parts for each range among the spare parts and accessories. Clean plastic polycarbonate bowls only with a damp cloth; solvents damage them.

Ventilek’s tip
Without a lubricator, a filter regulator is enough. It cleans the air and holds the pressure in one body. Only add oil to the air when the tools really need it.
- What is the difference between a filter regulator and a separate regulator?
- A filter regulator also has a filter with a condensate bowl in the same body, so it cleans the air before reducing the pressure. A separate regulator only reduces the pressure and needs a filter before it.
- How finely does the filter regulator clean?
- Depending on the range, with a 5 µm element (A2, FUTURA, A1X) or a 20 µm element (P2, I3, B2, I8). For cleaner air, add a 0.01 µm microfilter after it.
- What inlet pressure can it take?
- The plastic P2 and I3 12 and 13 bar, A2 10 bar, B2 and I8 18 bar, FUTURA 16 bar and the stainless steel A1X up to 60 bar.
- Which filter regulator is for explosive atmospheres?
- FUTURA filter regulators in sizes 1, 2 and 4. Size 0 is not for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
- Do I need a lubricator with the filter regulator?
- Only for consumers that are lubricated by the air, such as pneumatic tools. For painting, blow-off or measuring instruments, leave the lubricator out.
