Which Extensive or Expert A29B — spec, motor and tank
Three choices, in this order: how much spec you want on the machine, how much air the pump should deliver and how much of it the tank should hold. The voltage is then decided by the socket in your workshop.
Extensive (BT), or Expert (BP)
Both spec levels have the same pump, aftercooler, pressure switch, regulator with two gauges and DN 7.2 quick coupling. The Extensive stands on one front swivel castor with a brake and has an open handle; the Expert has two front swivel castors with brakes, a closed handle with a rubber grip and an outlet filter, which catches condensate before it reaches the tool. There is one Expert in this category: the A29BP-1.5-50CT on 400 V.
1.5 kW: 255 l/min, or 2.2 kW: 320 l/min
The A29B pump runs with a 1.5 kW (2 hp) motor at 1,075 rpm and draws in 255 l/min; with a 2.2 kW (3 hp) motor at 1,300 rpm it draws in 320 l/min — 65 l/min more for a sander, a ratchet or an impact wrench in longer bursts. Noise 93 dB Lwa (73 dB at 4 m) with 1.5 kW, 95 dB Lwa (75 dB at 4 m) with 2.2 kW.
A 50, 90, 150 or 200 l tank and the socket
The tank does not add displacement, but it gives the pump its pauses: the fifty for site work and the van, the ninety for a smaller workshop, 150 and 200 l for longer work by one person with a gun or a sander. The CM versions have a single-phase motor for an ordinary 230 V socket (150CM, 200CM), the CT versions a three-phase 400 V motor (50CT, 90CT, 150CT, 200CT).

Extensive (BT), or Expert (BP) — and when to go for the Export or the Expert Zero
Under the guard it is always the same A29B pump: the difference between Extensive and Expert lies in how you move the machine about and in what sits on the outlet. The sister Export range has the same pump on 230 V; the Expert Zero has its oil-free variant, the A29B0.
Extensive (BT): the base spec at no extra cost
An aftercooler, a pressure switch, a regulator with two gauges, a DN 7.2 quick coupling, an oil sight glass, a ball valve. One swivel castor with a brake at the front, two 200 mm wheels at the rear and, on top, an open tubular handle for pulling the machine across the workshop. Eight machines: 1.5 kW with 50, 90 and 150 l, 2.2 kW with 90, 150 and 200 l.
Expert (BP): two front castors, a handle and a filter
The same pump and the same aftercooler, plus two front swivel castors with brakes, a closed handle with a rubber grip and an outlet filter with a bowl next to the regulator. Worth it where the machine is moved every day and the air should go to the tool without condensate. The A29BP-1.5-50CT costs a little more than the Extensive with the same tank and motor.
When the Export or the Expert Zero
If you want the same A29B pump just for a 230 V socket and with a 50 or 90 l tank, you will find it at a lower price in the Export range — it runs at 750 rpm and draws in 178 l/min. If you need oil-free air for spraying or upholstery, there is the oil-free A29B0 pump in the Expert Zero range. If you want more than 320 l/min, you move up to the A39B pump.
V-belts, a moulded guard and an aftercooler — what is inside
Belts and 1,075 or 1,300 rpm
The motor drives the pump through V-belts with a reduction ratio: with 1.5 kW the pump runs at 1,075, with 2.2 kW at 1,300 revolutions per minute — slower than direct-drive pumps, which turn with the motor. The pistons and valves do fewer cycles per shift; the belt is a part you replace after years without opening up the pump. You check the oil level in the pump through the sight glass without opening anything.
Moulded belt guard
The guard does more than cover the belt: it is shaped so that the pulley drives cooling air over the finned cylinders of the pump. The machine cools itself even during longer work and the compressed air leaves cooler.
Aftercooler on the outlet
The compressed air leaves the pump through the finned tube of the aftercooler, where it cools down before it enters the tank. The moisture drops out as condensate in the tank, not in the hose at the tool, and you drain it through the ball valve under the tank. On the Expert the outlet filter catches the rest.
Tank, switch and outlet
A horizontal 50 to 200 l tank rated at 10 bar. The pressure switch starts and stops the motor according to pressure; the motor has thermal overload protection. On the outlet there is a pressure regulator, two gauges — tank pressure and tool pressure — and a DN 7.2 quick coupling. The AirTube QR code on the tank opens service videos.

Where the Extensive and Expert A29B work
The tradesman on site
Joiner, fitter, plumber: a stapler, a nail gun, blowing off and tyre inflation. The A29BT-1.5-50CT runs on 400 V from the site distribution board and, at 52 kg, is a two-person lift; if the only socket on site is 230 V, take the fifty from the Export range; a workshop with a 230 V socket calls for the A29BT-1.5-150CM.
Workshop, garage and tyre shop
A ratchet, an impact wrench in bursts, a blow gun, tyre inflation: the A29BT-2.2-90CT holds 90 l and 320 l/min for one person working with tools in bursts. Where the machine is wheeled from lift to lift every day, the Expert A29BP-1.5-50CT with its handle and two front castors makes sense.
Spraying and longer work
A spray gun, protective coatings, longer sanding: the A29BT-2.2-150CT or 200CT holds a reserve the tool draws on for longer before the motor cuts in; a regulator with a filter at the workstation belongs upstream of the gun. For two people with a gun or a sander at once, choose the A39B pump.
Accessories and service
The DN 7.2 quick coupling is the same standard as on the hoses, guns and tools across our whole range. The Extensive has a regulator without a filter — for a spray gun add a regulator with a filter at the workstation; the Expert has the outlet filter on the machine already. ABAC belongs to the Atlas Copco group and is one of the brands we repair in our own service workshop; parts for the A29B pump are shared with the Export range, which has the same pump.

Where next if neither the Extensive nor the Expert A29B is the right fit
The A29B is the smallest pump in the belt-driven Pro Line range. If you need more air, a two-stage machine, oil-free air, a lower price for the same pump or a lighter direct-drive machine, ABAC has alternatives. One pump, two spec levels: the Extensive is for those who put the machine in one place, the Expert for those who wheel it about every day. The difference between BT and BP is not in the pump or the aftercooler — both have those. It is in the castors, the handle and the filter on the outlet, in other words in what you notice when you pull the machine across the workshop a hundred times a week, and in whether water drips from your hose. For a fixed spot by the lift I would take the A29BT-2.2-90CT, for a workshop with nothing but an ordinary socket the A29BT-2.2-150CM, for wheeling about the A29BP-1.5-50CT. If you want the machine just for a 230 V socket and at a lower price, look at the Export; if you need oil-free air, at the Expert Zero.

- What do CM and CT mean in the designation?
- CM is a single-phase motor for an ordinary 230 V socket (A29BT-1.5-150CM, A29BT-2.2-150CM, A29BT-2.2-200CM), CT a three-phase 400 V motor (50CT, 90CT, 150CT, 200CT). Neither displacement nor pressure changes with the voltage; the three-phase motor needs a 400 V socket, the single-phase a short, adequately rated lead so that start-up does not trip the breaker. Single-phase machines from all the brands we stock are grouped together under 230 V compressors.
- Which tank size should I choose?
- The tank does not add displacement, it only extends the time the tool draws air before the motor cuts in. 50 l is enough for a stapler, tyre inflation and blowing off, and the machine fits in the van; 90 l is the workshop standard for a ratchet and an impact wrench in bursts; 150 and 200 l hold a reserve for a spray gun and longer sanding. Parameter categories compare machines of all brands by tank size, for example compressors with a 90 l tank.
- How much air does the A29B pump deliver?
- With a 1.5 kW motor it draws in 255 l/min at 1,075 rpm, with a 2.2 kW motor 320 l/min at 1,300 rpm; both fill the tank to 10 bar. How much air your tools actually take and how to work it out is explained in our article on choosing a compressor.
- How loud are they?
- The 1.5 kW machines have 93 dB Lwa and 73 dB at 4 m, the 2.2 kW machines 95 dB Lwa and 75 dB at 4 m. If you need far fewer decibels, ABAC has the same pump in a sound-insulated cabinet in the Silent range. Stand the machine on a level floor and not tucked into a corner, where the noise bounces back.
- Why does the A29B have V-belts, and what are the moulded guard and the aftercooler for?
- The belts let the pump run slower than the motor — 1,075 or 1,300 rpm; the pistons do fewer cycles per shift and the pump heats up less. The moulded belt guard guides cooling air from the pulley over the finned cylinders; the aftercooler cools the compressed air before it enters the tank, so the condensate stays in the tank. Lighter machines without belts are in the ABAC Line range.
- What is the warranty?
- Two years on the machine, with an optional extension to three years at extra cost when you buy, and ten years on the tank against rusting through. That goes hand in hand with routine maintenance as per the manual: draining the condensate, checking the oil level in the sight glass, changing the oil and cleaning the intake filter.
- Who is the range for?
- The Extensive for tradesmen, workshops and demanding home workshops, where tools draw air in bursts and the machine mostly stays put. The Expert for those who wheel the machine around the workshop or garage every day and want air without condensate straight from the machine. A piston machine works in cycles and needs pauses; for two people with tools at once choose the bigger A39B pump, for a sander or an impact wrench running non-stop the two-stage A49B.
- How does the A29B differ from the Export range and from the Expert Zero?
- The Export has the same A29B pump, but only with a 1.5 kW motor on 230 V, a 50 or 90 l tank and at 750 rpm — it draws in 178 l/min and costs less. The Expert Zero has the oil-free A29B0 pump for spraying and upholstery. - Where do I find the service videos, and who does the servicing?
- On the tank there is an AirTube sticker with a QR code — scanned with a phone, it opens instructional and service videos for the pump. Service, belts, filters and oil are handled by our workshop; the other ranges, from the suitcase models to the screw compressors, are in the ABAC brand guide.
All values apply to a 50 Hz supply. Air displacement is the amount of air the pump draws in; how much of it reaches the tool depends on the pressure and the tank. Noise is given as the sound power level Lwa and the sound pressure at 4 m from the machine. A piston compressor works in cycles (topping up the tank and pausing), not continuously.
