90 litre air compressors
Ninety litres is the size from which low-speed, V-belt-driven twin-cylinder machines dominate our range — built for longer work than small workshop compressors. Fourteen of them still plug into a standard 230 V socket; the rest need a three-phase supply.

Why 90 litres
ABAC and ATMOS in particular build their workshop compressors on 90 l tanks; WALTER has a vertical ninety-litre tank and a horizontal hundred-litre one. In practice you will not notice ten litres either way — if you are looking for a machine ‘around a hundred’, also take a look at 100 litre air compressors.
Compared with a fifty-litre machine, a ninety-litre one has roughly double the reserve and, above all, different machinery: the belt slows the pump to 750 to 1,400 rpm, the cylinders run cooler and the compressor copes with longer work with an impact wrench, a grinder or a spray gun.
What you will find in this size
ABAC twin-cylinder workshop machines
Most machines come from the ABAC Pro Line, in Extensive, Expert and Export versions, plus the oil-free ABAC Expert Zero for 230 or 400 V. The soundproofed A29B in a cabinet is meant for places where people work right next to the compressor.
Cast-iron pumps
The ATMOS Perfect 4/90 gives 650 l/min, the most in this size. The cast-iron WALTER VWK models have a vertical tank and take up less floor space. Both brands use cast-iron cylinders, which dissipate heat better.
Higher pressure
The 90 l tank also carries two-stage machines: the ABAC A49B at 11 bar, the B59B at 15 bar for mobile tyre fitting and the ABAC Tech ATH at 15 and 20 bar with a continuous-duty motor. Why pressure above 10 bar calls for two compression stages is explained under two-stage air compressors.
How to choose
Work out the air consumption of all the tools that will run at the same time, and add a margin. The machine’s air output — not its intake — should be higher than that demand. A step-by-step guide is in our article Choosing the right compressor size in 3 steps. If even 90 litres is not enough, the next step up is a 150 litre air compressor; all sizes are listed under air compressors.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a 90 l or a 100 l compressor better?
- The difference in air reserve is negligible. Choose by the machine — its air output, voltage and drive — not by ten litres of tank.
- Can a 90 l compressor run a spray gun?
- It depends on the gun and the machine’s air output. Belt-driven twin-cylinder machines with around 250 l/min or more can handle a standard spray gun, with breaks for preparation.
- Is there a 90 l compressor for 230 V?
- Yes, fourteen machines with 1.5 to 2.2 kW. More powerful machines with 3 and 4 kW need a three-phase 400 V supply.
