Product detailed description
WALTER VWK550-4.0/90P Vertical Cast Iron Piston Compressor
VWK550-4.0/90P is a WALTER series vertical model with a 3W three-cylinder unit – only the most powerful VWK900-7.5/270P features three cylinders in the vertical design. Power input is 3.0 kW, intake 530 l/min, effective displacement 440 l/min at 10 bar, and speed 1202 min⁻¹. The 90 l receiver is vertical, powered by 400 V / 50 Hz, with a noise level of approx. 80 dB(A).
Among the vertical models with a 90l tank, this is the most powerful: 440 l/min from a machine that occupies roughly the same space as the entry-level model. However, this space-saving comes at a price: 90 l of capacity is low for this delivery rate, and the motor cycles more frequently than on horizontal versions with 200 or 270 l. Warranty of 3 years after registration at waltercesko.cz.
Configuration of this machine
Why choose this model
Compared to the entry-level vertical, the delivery increases from 340 to 440 l/min, nearly a third, while the machine remains on the same 90l vertical tank. If your current compressor is struggling to keep up but you have no extra floor space, this is the direct path to upgrade.
The 3W unit has 3 cylinders in a W-configuration and runs at 1202 rpm. Distributing compression across 3 cylinders means more even loading on the crank mechanism and lower delivery pulsation – for a machine with a small tank, where every shock reflects in the distribution, this is a significant detail.
Our calculated filling time for an empty 90l tank to 10 bar is approximately 2.0 minutes – the fastest of all vertical models in the series (VWK430-3.0/90P 2.6 min, VWK900-7.5/270P 3.6 min, VWK650-5.5/270P 4.9 min). In normal operation, however, the tank is only topped up by 2 bar, which takes mere seconds.
A 90 l tank provides 180 l of free air per cycle at a pressure difference of 2 bar. With a continuous draw of 150 l/min, this means approximately 33 motor starts per hour, whereas a horizontal 200l version of the same class would be around 15. The machine is therefore designed for batch work, not for all-day grinding.
Design and technology

Piston, rings and cast-iron liner
The cast-iron cylinder liner and piston rings are standard service parts — the unit can be refurbished after years of use rather than discarded.

Intake filter with steel mesh
The new generation metal insert withstands repeated blowing out with compressed air, whereas a paper insert would tear after a few cleanings.

Head gaskets and valves
The redesigned cylinder head gaskets maintain pressure even after thermal cycles; valve plates are stocked as spare parts.

Inspection on a 3D measuring machine
Key dimensions of the unit are verified on a coordinate measuring machine — this ensures that parts from different series fit together perfectly.
Technical Data VWK550-4.0/90P
What the data sheet doesn't tell you — calculated values
Values are calculated from manufacturer parameters and serve for comparing models with each other, not as a guaranteed figure.
Who is it for
It is suitable for a tyre service or an auto repair shop with a single bay, where the lift, tyre changer, and balancer take up the entire hall and only a corner by the wall remains for the compressor. It also serves smaller metalworking shops equally well, where air is used for clamping, blowing off, and short operations with an impact wrench. 440 l/min covers one continuous tool or a combination of two tools used briefly and alternately.
Typical applications
- 1/2" impact wrench in a single bay – the delivery and tank cover the short-term peak of 300 to 400 l/min
- Tyre changer, inflation, and pressure adjustment in a tyre service
- Stapler and blow-off gun used simultaneously during assembly
- HVLP spray gun for smaller parts and touch-up painting
- Pneumatic clamping of fixtures and cylinder control on a machine tool
- Blowing and cleaning of machines, moulds and extraction paths
Where to choose a different model
A ninety-litre tank is not dimensioned for this – the motor would switch on too frequently. Choose the horizontal WK550-4,0/270P with the same unit and a 270l air tank, where the number of starts will drop significantly.
View recommended model →VWK650-5,5/270P features a vertical 270l tank and a displacement of 530 l/min at speeds below 1000. It is a significantly larger machine, but it still stands against the wall.
View recommended model →The horizontal WK550-4,0/200P has the same three-cylinder unit, double the air reserve and a tank on wheels. The advantage of a vertical model is not worth it in such a workshop.

Inspections may be carried out by an authorised WALTER service centre or by yourself — provided that original parts and fluids are used and proof of purchase is retained.
3 year WALTER warranty

36 months after registration at waltercesko.cz
The warranty is provided by Walter Kompressortechnik Česko s.r.o. (Ostrava). Machine registration extends the warranty to 36 months from the date of purchase; proof of purchase is required to claim the warranty.
- Claim assessment within 14 working days, approved repairs free of charge and completed within 30 days
- After 4 repairs and a further defect, you are entitled to a replacement of the machine with a fault-free one
- You may perform the prescribed inspections yourself — using original parts and providing proof of purchase
Transport and Commissioning
The machine is delivered on a pallet. Before the first start, check the oil level, direction of rotation, and the tightness of connections; after the first 8 hours of operation, tighten the cylinder head bolts to a torque of 25 Nm. Leave the electrical connection to a professional — for three-phase machines, it is necessary to verify the correct phase sequence.
