WALTER VWK550-4,0/90P Vertical Cast-Iron Piston Compressor
VWK550-4,0/90P is a WALTER series vertical model with a 3W three-cylinder unit – the only other vertical model with three cylinders is the most powerful VWK900-7,5/270P. Power input is 3.0 kW, intake 530 l/min, effective delivery 440 l/min at 10 bar, and speed 1,202 rpm. The 90 l tank stands vertically; power supply 400 V / 50 Hz, noise level approx. 80 dB(A).
Among the vertical models with a 90l tank, this is the most powerful: 440 l/min from a machine that occupies roughly the same space as the entry-level model. However, this space-saving has a catch: 90 l of reserve is too little for this delivery rate, and the motor cycles more frequently than on the horizontal versions with 200 or 270 l. Compared to the entry-level vertical, the delivery increases from 340 to 440 l/min, i.e. by nearly a third, while the machine remains on the same 90l vertical tank. If your current compressor is struggling to keep up but you have no extra floor space, this is the direct path to upgrade.
3W three-cylinder unit instead of a twin-cylinder
The 3W unit has 3 cylinders in a W-configuration and runs at 1,202 rpm. Distributing compression across 3 cylinders means more even loading on the crank mechanism and lower delivery pulsation – for a machine with a small tank, where every pulse is felt in the air network, this is no mere detail.

The cost of saving space
A 90 l tank provides 180 l of free air per cycle at a pressure difference of 2 bar. With a continuous draw of 150 l/min, this means approximately 33 motor starts per hour, whereas a horizontal 200l version of the same class would be around 15. The machine is therefore designed for batch work, not for all-day grinding.

It is suitable for a tyre shop or a car repair shop with a single bay, where the lift, tyre changer, and balancer take up the entire hall and only a corner by the wall remains for the compressor. - Why does this machine have three cylinders when the more powerful WK650 has only two?
- This is not a data error. The WK550 platform achieves 440 l/min using three smaller cylinders in a W-configuration at 1,202 rpm, whereas the more powerful WK650 platform reaches 550 l/min with two larger-bore cylinders at lower speeds of 993 rpm. Both paths lead to the goal, just through a different design.
- Is 90 litres too little for a delivery rate of 440 l/min?
- For continuous demand, yes; for batch work, no. 90 l is a reserve to level out short peaks, not for long continuous demand – at a constant 150 l/min, the motor will switch on approximately 33× per hour. This model is a conscious compromise in favour of space. If you also require a larger reserve, switch to the horizontal WK550-4,0/200P or WK550-4,0/270P version with the same unit.
- Can it handle a 1/2" impact wrench?
- Yes. The wrench consumes 300 to 400 l/min, but only for a few seconds per bolt – the 440 l/min delivery exceeds its consumption, and the tank buffers the peak demand. What it cannot handle is an impact wrench and another continuous tool operating simultaneously: the delivery is insufficient for this.
- What about vibrations with a vertical tank?
- The three-cylinder unit is inherently more balanced than a two-cylinder one, resulting in lower vibration. However, it should be noted that a vertical model has a higher centre of gravity: place it on a flat, solid floor, do not shim individual feet, and anchor it according to the manual when operating in environments with moving handling equipment.
- How much space do I save compared to the horizontal version?
- The vertical tank reduces the footprint to approximately half, and the machine can be placed tight against the wall where a horizontal version with wheels and a handle would not fit. In exchange, it extends upwards – before ordering, measure the clear height of your workshop and its doors and compare it with the dimensions in the technical specifications.
