Oil-lubricated air compressors
An oil-lubricated compressor has an oil fill that lubricates the moving parts, carries away heat and acts as a seal. It is the most widespread compressor design: our range includes 624 oil-lubricated machines — piston units for workshops and production, screw units for air use that lasts the whole shift, and engine-driven units for work without electricity.

What the oil does in a compressor
In a piston machine the oil sits in the crankcase and lubricates the crankshaft, the connecting rods and the pistons in the cylinders. In a screw compressor it is injected directly between the rotors: it seals the gap between them, removes the heat generated during compression and is then separated from the air again in the oil separator. A small trace of oil still remains in the air. That does no harm when inflating tyres or running air tools; for spray painting, food production or a laboratory, filtration is fitted downstream of the compressor, or you choose an oil-free piston compressor.

Piston compressors
Two hundred and ninety-two machines from 1.5 to 15 kW with a pressure of 8 to 30 bar; 221 of them run on 400 V and 62 on a standard 230 V socket. Most have two cylinders and a V-belt that slows the pump down to 688 to 1,400 rpm — slower running means a lower oil temperature and less wear. The largest share of the piston machines comes from the ABAC Pro Line; others include the soundproofed ABAC Silent, the cast-iron ATMOS Perfect and WALTER, and the industrial ABAC Tech.
Nine items are bare ABAC compressor pumps, A29 to B79, without a motor or tank — for building your own unit or replacing a worn-out pump.
Screw compressors
Three hundred and ten machines from 2.2 to 315 kW with a pressure of 7 to 20 bar, mainly from the SCR, ATMOS, WALTER and ABAC SPINN ranges. Two hundred of them are base-mounted without a tank, 81 have a built-in dryer and 190 an inverter that adapts the motor speed to the air demand. Engine-driven compressors
Twenty-two Engine Air machines are powered by their own engine — eighteen by petrol and four by diesel — and compress air to 10 to 14 bar with an oil-lubricated piston pump. They are designed for building sites and field work. The diesel machines for long shifts are grouped together under diesel air compressors.
Oil and oil changes
An oil-lubricated machine needs its oil level checked and its oil changed from time to time. Mineral oil lasts roughly 1,000 to 2,000 operating hours, synthetic oil 4,000 to 12,000 hours; piston and screw machines take different types. Oil-lubricated or oil-free?
For piston machines, an oil-lubricated unit copes with longer running and has a longer service life, whereas an oil-free one is lighter and needs no oil changes. Frequently asked questions
- Is air from an oil-lubricated compressor suitable for spray painting?
- With filtration, yes. A condensate separator and a fine filter that captures the oil aerosol are fitted after the compressor. For food production and laboratories, an oil-free machine is the safer choice.
- How often should compressor oil be changed?
- It depends on operating hours and the type of oil — mineral oil roughly every 1,000 to 2,000 hours, synthetic every 4,000 to 12,000. The exact interval is given in the machine’s manual.
- Is a screw compressor oil-lubricated?
- Most are — our range includes 310 oil-injected screw machines. The injected oil seals the rotors and carries away heat, so the machine can run for a whole shift.
