Three-cylinder air compressors
In our range, only the cast-iron pumps of two brands have three cylinders — ATMOS Perfect and WALTER. Three smaller pistons alternate more evenly than two large ones, so the pump runs with better balance and draws in more air at lower speed. All machines are belt-driven with a three-phase motor of 3 to 5.5 kW and oil lubrication.

Why three cylinders
With three cylinders, the heat is spread over three cast-iron bodies and each piston compresses a smaller charge. As a result, the machine supplies more air at the same speed — a 5.5 kW three-cylinder machine gives 740 to 750 l/min at under a thousand rpm.
Three cylinders versus two, in figures
From one kilowatt, a three-cylinder machine typically gives around 136 litres of air per minute, a twin-cylinder one around 116. At 5.5 kW that means 740 to 750 l/min against roughly 640 l/min for a typical twin-cylinder machine; at 3 kW, 408 to 440 l/min against roughly 350. The difference shows most on machines that run for long periods, because they heat up less.
Two brands
ATMOS Perfect
The three-cylinder Perfect 3, 4T and 5.5 on tanks from 90 to 500 l, base-mounted without a tank, and as packages with a dryer and filtration that supply dry air straight away. The 4T version reaches 12.5 bar. The whole range is under ATMOS Perfect.
WALTER
The cast-iron WK550 and WK900 pumps on tanks from 90 to 500 l, including vertical tanks, and also on their own on a base frame. The 5.5 kW WK900 runs at only 902 rpm. For an overview, see WALTER cast-iron compressors.
When a three-cylinder machine pays off
In a garage, joinery or workshop where the compressor runs for hours a day and demand is higher than a smaller twin-cylinder machine can handle. Most often, a three-cylinder pump sits on a 270 l tank. For comparison: a broad band from small to industrial is covered by twin-cylinder air compressors, and four-cylinder machines are one step up.
