10 bar air compressors
Ten bar is the pressure most workshop compressors are built for. A piston machine pressurises the tank to this level and the tools take air from it at around 6.3 bar — the difference is the reserve the compressor works with and a margin for losses in the hoses. Why ten bar
A piston compressor does not cut out and cut in at the same pressure: the pressure switch stops it at the upper value and restarts it once the pressure has dropped by 15 to 20%. At ten bar, the machine therefore cuts in at around eight bar, and tools working at 6.3 bar still have a margin. Ten bar is also the ceiling for a standard single-stage piston compressor. Higher pressures are reached by two-stage machines that cool the air between the two stages — you will find them under 11 bar air compressors. Where the pipework is short, on the other hand, electricity can be saved with 8 bar air compressors.
How to narrow down the range
Piston or screw 10 bar air compressor
For intermittent work in a workshop, the right choice is piston air compressors — over 190 machines at ten bar. Where air flows all day, it pays to choose screw compressors; there are 150 of them at 10 bar and 88 have a variable speed drive (inverter). Seven machines are scroll compressors, completely oil-free.
10 bar air compressor for 230 V
Sixty-eight machines run from a 230 V socket. They have 1.5 to 3 kW and 121 to 340 l/min, enough for a workshop with one tool running. The rest need a three-phase supply, and sixteen machines have a combustion engine — they work without electricity.
By tank size
Piston machines at 10 bar have tanks from 24 to 500 litres, and the most common are 270 litre air compressors. Seventy machines come without a tank, for use with your own air tank, and fifty-four have a built-in dryer.
What matters more than pressure
Most of our range works at 10 bar, so pressure hardly sets the machines apart. What decides is the air output — how much air the machine supplies per minute — and how long it will run. Compare the output with the consumption of the tools that will run at the same time, and keep a margin. All types and sizes are in our overview of air compressors.

- What pressure should I set my compressor to?
- To the pressure that is still sufficient at the end of the line. Tools need around 6.3 bar; add the losses in hoses and couplings — anything beyond that is wasted energy.
- Does a 10 bar compressor give more air than an 8 bar one?
- No, rather the opposite. Higher pressure means more work for the machine — the same compressor supplies slightly more air at 8 bar than at 10.
- How much air does a 10 bar compressor give?
- From 121 l/min for a small plug-in machine to 60,000 l/min for the largest screw compressor. For a workshop with one or two tools, 200 to 400 l/min is usually enough.
- Which 10 bar compressor should I choose for a workshop?
- For intermittent work, a belt-driven twin-cylinder piston machine with a 90 to 270 l tank; if the compressor will run most of the day, a screw machine. Without a three-phase supply, choose from the 68 machines for 230 V up to 3 kW.
