Rotair Xtra is a synthetic oil and the top range the manufacturer makes for ABAC SPINN screw compressors. It handles an interval of 8,000 running hours and an ambient of up to 46 °C — four times the interval and sixteen degrees more than the basic Rotair.
When synthetic is not optional
The manufacturer names it as the only option in two cases: when the compressor room is above 40 °C, and when the environment is very dusty — mining, cement works, metalworking, steelmaking and foundries.
The second reason is an annual running time around 8,000 hours, that is continuous duty. There a synthetic pays off on economics alone: one change a year instead of four, and four times fewer filters and separators with it.
What the manufacturer states

- Viscosity grade ISO VG 46 — the same across all four Rotair oils.
- The manufacturer quotes the service life at normal temperature and humidity and in a dust-free environment.
- The oil filter and separator are changed together with the oil.

- Ambient temperature range 0 to 46 °C, colour clear.
How it differs from its siblings
Larger packs of the same oil are RTX-20 and RTX-209. The cheaper mineral oils are RTP-5 and RTR-5; for food plants the oil is RTF-5.

Moving from mineral to synthetic means a flush and new filters. Pouring one on top of the other is the most expensive shortcut I know.
Technical data follow the supplier’s datasheet and the manufacturer’s documentation. The change interval applies at normal temperature and humidity and in a dust-free environment. Oil is drained warm, with the machine shut down and depressurised.
