Screw compressors with a variable-speed drive change speed steadily to match actual demand, so they deliver exactly as much air as is being drawn. That removes the off-load running which, at fixed speed, burns electricity for nothing — in plants with fluctuating demand it is usually the single biggest saving. The drive also starts the motor softly, so no inrush current hits the supply.
