    Y/D – star-delta

    Star-delta (Y/D) starting runs the motor up in star connection at reduced voltage first and only switches to delta once it is turning. That cuts the inrush current to roughly a third, so the machine neither overloads the supply nor drags the mains voltage down. It is the standard arrangement on larger compressors wherever no variable-speed drive is fitted.
