Air compressors with a star-delta starter
Star-delta (Y/D) starting limits the current surge when a larger motor starts. The motor runs up connected in star and after a few seconds switches over to delta for full power. Every machine on this page has it — 26 piston compressors from 4 to 15 kW for 400 V.

Why the motor starts in star
With a direct-on-line start, an electric motor draws several times its rated current. On a more powerful machine this can trip the circuit breaker or cause a brief voltage dip in the supply. In star, each winding gets only 230 V instead of 400 V, so the starting current and the torque both fall to roughly a third.
Which machines have Y/D starting
ABAC Tech
Twenty-five direct-drive machines: single-stage ATL and oil-free ATF at 10 bar, and two-stage high-pressure ATH at 15, 20 and 30 bar. In the ABAC Tech range, every machine with the letter X at the end of its code has a star-delta starter, for example the ATL-7,5-BTX or ATH-5,5/15-270FTX. ATMOS Perfect 7,5/500YD
The only belt-driven machine: a cast-iron two-stage twin-cylinder unit on a horizontal 500 l tank with an output of 1,170 l/min, the most on this page. The letters YD in its name indicate exactly that: star-delta starting. More machines from this range are under ATMOS Perfect.
Pressure and tank
Nine machines work at 10 bar, five at 15 bar, seven at 20 bar and five at 30 bar. Twenty are base-mounted without a tank, with the air tank chosen to suit consumption; five ABAC Tech machines sit on a horizontal 270 l air tank and the Perfect on a 500 l one.
Screw compressors with an inverter
A screw compressor with an inverter does not need a star-delta starter — the inverter brings the motor up to speed smoothly from low revs. Such machines are listed under screw compressors with an inverter.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does a 230 V machine have no star-delta starter?
- Star and delta connections are only possible on a three-phase motor. Our single-phase 230 V machines go up to 3 kW and start direct-on-line.
- From what motor power is star-delta starting used?
- In our range, piston machines with 4 to 15 kW have it; smaller motors start direct-on-line. Other three-phase machines are under 400 V air compressors.
