Air compressors without a tank

A tankless air compressor is a pump and motor on a frame or in a cabinet, for which you choose the air tank separately. That is how compressor rooms are built: the tank is sized for the pipework and air consumption, not for one machine. Most of the range is screw compressors, joined by industrial piston machines and oil-free scroll compressors.

Why a compressor without a tank

A compressor room with its own tank

With screw compressors, a separate tank is the norm. The tank size is chosen according to output, consumption and the length of the pipework, and several compressors can feed one tank. The machine can then be replaced without changing the inspected tank. How to choose a tank is covered in our article on air tanks and pressure vessels.

Replacing an old compressor

When a compressor on a sound tank reaches the end of its life, you can simply buy a new base-mounted unit and connect it to the tank. The tank must, however, have a valid inspection and a safety valve rated for the pressure of the new machine.

High pressure

ABAC Tech ATH piston machines for 15, 20 and 30 bar are mainly supplied base-mounted — the operator has their own tank for such pressure, and it must be certified for it. The highest pressure of them all, thirty bar, is offered by 30 bar air compressors.

Screw compressors without a tank

Two hundred and thirty-three screw machines from 3.7 to 315 kW. Most come from SCR: the PM, EPM and EPM2 ranges with permanent magnet motors, the large oil-free G, GV, WG and WGV and the two-stage H and HPM. The other large groups are ATMOS SMARTRONIC and Albert, and the 53 WALTER machines from 5.5 to 315 kW. One hundred and fifty-two screw machines have an inverter that matches motor speed to consumption, and most are in a soundproofed cabinet. Piston compressors without a tank

Forty-seven base-mounted piston machines, mostly continuous-duty units from the industrial ABAC Tech range: oil-lubricated ATL, oil-free ATF and high-pressure ATH. They are joined by cast-iron WALTER and ATMOS Perfect pumps on a base frame and oil-free medical compressors. A base-mounted piston machine suits sites where demand comes in bursts and a tank is already in service.

Scroll compressors without a tank

Twenty-one oil-free scroll compressors SCR-XA from 2.2 to 30 kW at 7, 8 and 10 bar. They are stand-alone machines in a cabinet with a noise level of 55 to 74 dB(A) and air in oil class 0 to ISO 8573-1 — for surgeries, laboratories and the food industry. The air tank is chosen separately to match consumption.

What you need with the unit

A compressor without a tank needs an air tank with a safety valve and pressure gauge, condensate drainage and, depending on the application, a dryer and filters. Frequently asked questions

How big an air tank does a tankless compressor need?: It depends on the air output, the demand and how often the machine is allowed to start. For piston compressors the usual limit is ten starts per hour; the calculation is in our article on pressure vessels.
Can a screw compressor work without an air tank?: It can feed the pipework directly, but without a tank it would switch between load and idle more often and the pressure would fluctuate. That is why a screw compressor needs an air tank — it is just chosen separately.
Are tankless compressors portable?: No. This page lists stationary machines for compressor rooms and industrial sites. Small portable compressors are under the 6 l tank size.
