Single-cylinder air compressors
One cylinder and one piston is the simplest compressor design. Such machines are small, light and all plug into a 230 V socket. Most have the motor directly on the crankshaft, running at 2,850 rpm — which is why they are louder and need breaks.

Who a single cylinder is for
For the home workshop, the garage and occasional jobs: topping up tyres, blowing off a part, stapling, brief tightening. A single-cylinder machine heats up quickly, so it should rest between uses. For longer work, a machine with two cylinders is better suited — they share the work and run slower.
How much air one cylinder gives
Per kilowatt of motor power, a single-cylinder machine typically gives around 85 litres of air per minute, a twin-cylinder one around 116. The difference lies mainly in the speed: a fast-running single cylinder turns more energy into heat. The most air, 257 l/min, comes from the Black Wind BB-2,2-50CM — the only single-cylinder machine with a belt, running at just 1,050 rpm.
What this group includes
Oil-lubricated machines
Fifteen machines have an oil fill that lubricates and cools the piston. They include small Black Wind machines with 24 and 50 l tanks and the 10 bar ABAC models with tanks from 9 to 90 l, the ABAC L25P and L30PN.
Oil-free machines
Eight machines run without oil: small Black Wind BO units, the Suitcase compressor in its carry case and the soundproofed Silent Mini with 0.34 kW, the least powerful compressor in our range. Most of them are among the portable air compressors with a 6 litre tank.
By tank size
Single-cylinder machines have tanks from six to ninety litres, most often 6, 24 and 50 l; the smallest on wheels are 24 litre air compressors. You will find the whole plug-in trade range under ABAC Line.
When to go for two cylinders
When the compressor will run for more than a few minutes at a stretch, or when you need more than 250 l/min. Then it is time for twin-cylinder air compressors, the most common design in our range. Other types are in our overview of air compressors.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a single-cylinder compressor louder?
- Usually, yes — it runs faster. Oil-lubricated single-cylinder machines measure 75 to 77 dB at four metres, the oil-free Black Wind BO and Suitcase 56 to 68 dB, and the soundproofed Silent Mini 43 dB, though it gives only 27 l/min.
- How long can a single-cylinder compressor run?
- It is built for intermittent use. In long runs it overheats and the thermal cut-out switches it off — so it should rest between uses.
- Is a single-cylinder compressor oil-lubricated?
- Fifteen machines are oil-lubricated with 8 to 10 bar, eight are oil-free with 8 bar. The oil-free ones are lighter and travel well; the oil-lubricated ones give more air.
