500 litre air compressors
A five-hundred-litre tank goes with large machines from 4 to 22 kW that supply a workshop with several workstations or a small production plant. All are 400 V and stand on feet; they give 408 to 3,600 litres of air per minute.

Piston or screw on 500 l
Two-stage piston machines and tandems
Most numerous are ABAC two-stage twin-cylinder machines at 11 bar: B59B, B60 and B70 in the basic version, with a dryer, low-speed and in a cabinet. In a class of their own are the tandem compressors — two pumps on one tank that take turns, and if one fails, the other keeps going. The cast-iron ATMOS Perfect and WALTER machines have three or four cylinders running at low speed.
In a cabinet and with a dryer
ABAC Silent Line LN machines have the pump in a cabinet, so they can stand in the workshop where people work. Some have a refrigerant dryer mounted on the tank and supply dry air without further treatment; in all, 42 machines on a five-hundred-litre tank come with a dryer.
Screw compressors
Forty-seven screw machines from 5.5 to 22 kW: twenty from ATMOS, seventeen from WALTER and the rest from ABAC SPINN and SCR. Twenty-one have an inverter. A screw compressor on a five-hundred-litre tank is a complete compressor station — just connect the pipework.
Why such a large tank
Between cut-out at 10 bar and cut-in at around 6.5 bar, the tank provides roughly 1,750 litres of air. A piston machine therefore starts less often and lasts longer; with a screw compressor the tank evens out swings in demand and the pressure in the pipework varies less. A large tank also cools the air more and condenses water out of it, which needs to be drained regularly.

Two-stage piston machines at 11 bar are all together under 11 bar air compressors. One tank size down, with the widest choice of machines, are 270 litre air compressors. - How much space does a 500 l compressor need?
- The tank is about two metres long; also allow space around the machine for servicing and ventilation to carry the heat away.
- Does a 500 l compressor tank need inspections?

- Are 500 l compressors 230 V?
- No. All of them need a three-phase 400 V supply, and the smallest have a 4 kW motor.
