Pressure vessels and air receivers for the food industry (ALM coating)

Pressure vessels and air receivers for the food industry — 38 vessels from 270 to 10000 litres with an ALM internal epoxy coating that is approved for contact with food. Vertical and horizontal, for 11, 12 and 16 bar, for food and beverage production and anywhere the compressed air comes into contact with the product.
On the outside, the vessels are painted in blue RAL 5015, and the oxygen vessels in white RAL 9010. For 31 vessels, the ALM coating is one of three versions on the same product page, alongside the painted and the galvanised version; the seven oxygen vessels always have it. They are made of carbon steel by the Italian Baglioni group; you will find the other finishes and the stainless steel vessels in our overview of all pressure vessels and air receivers.
Air receivers for the food industry by category
The vessels with the ALM coating come from four categories: medium-sized vessels from 270 to 720 l, large vessels from 1000 to 3000 l, vessels rated down to −20 °C and oxygen vessels. You will find the dimensions and connections on each vessel’s product page.
| Pressure vessels with the ALM internal coating by category | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Category | Items | Volumes | Working pressure | Finish |
| Vessels down to −20 °C and for group 1 fluids | 13 | 1000–10000 l | 12 bar or 16 bar | paint, hot-dip zinc, ALM |
| Vessels from 1000 to 3000 l | 10 | 1000–3000 l | 12 bar or 16 bar | paint, hot-dip zinc, ALM |
| Vessels from 100 to 720 l | 8 | 270–720 l | 11 bar or 16 bar | paint, hot-dip zinc, ALM |
| Oxygen vessels | 7 | 500–5000 l | 11 bar or 12 bar | white RAL 9010 paint, ALM inside |
In the horizontal design, the ALM coating comes on the 270, 500 and 720 l vessels for 11 bar and the 1000, 2000 and 3000 l vessels for 12 bar; the others are vertical. You can recognise the ALM version by the letter A as the third letter of the order code, for example VVA1000-12.

Why an ALM-coated vessel for the food industry
A standard painted vessel is bare steel inside. Condensate that stays at the bottom rusts it from the inside and is carried along with the air into the pipework. A vessel with the ALM coating has an epoxy coating approved for contact with food on the inside and is painted on the outside like a standard air receiver.
That is why the ALM version is chosen for food and beverage production and anywhere the air or gas comes into contact with the product.

Pressure vessels for the food industry: series and sizes
The vessels from 270 to 720 l for 11 and 16 bar, vertical and horizontal, are manufactured to the SPVD Directive 2014/29/EU and suit a smaller operation as the main air receiver downstream of a screw compressor. The large vessels from 1000 to 3000 l comply with the PED Directive 2014/68/EU: vertical ones for 12 bar in all sizes and for 16 bar in all except 1500 l, horizontal ones for 12 bar only. How to calculate the size is shown in our advice centre on choosing an air receiver.
The ALM-coated vessels rated down to −20 °C, from 1000 to 10000 l for 12 and 16 bar, can also stand outdoors or in an unheated hall. The seven oxygen vessels from 500 to 5000 l always have the ALM coating and white RAL 9010 paint on the outside. They are intended for oxygen and other group 1 fluids except hydrogen, and their coating is also approved for contact with food.
ALM coating or stainless steel?
A vessel with the ALM coating is made of carbon steel protected on the inside by an approved epoxy coating, and it is made up to 10000 l and 16 bar. A stainless steel vessel has no coating: it is made entirely of AISI304 or AISI316L steel, pickled and passivated inside and out, so there is nothing inside that could peel off. It is made from 5 to 3000 l for 11 and 12 bar and is chosen where air purity matters.
Fittings and inspections
Vessels with the ALM coating are supplied without fittings; we do not supply fully equipped vessels with an internal coating for the food industry. The safety valve, pressure gauge, shut-off valves and condensate drain are ordered separately, and for an oxygen vessel only fittings designed for oxygen. Inspections and their intervals are set by national regulations according to the vessel’s volume and pressure; you will find an overview for the Czech Republic in our article on pressure vessel inspections.

Ventilek’s tip
The coating protects the vessel; a filter protects the product. Condensate collects at the bottom of an ALM-coated vessel just as in any other. Drain it every day, and where the air comes into contact with the product, install filtration downstream of the vessel as well.
- Which air receiver should I choose for the food industry?
- A vessel with the ALM internal epoxy coating, which is approved for contact with food. It is made from 270 to 10000 l for 11, 12 and 16 bar, in vertical and horizontal designs.
- How do I recognise a pressure vessel for the food industry?
- By the letter A as the third letter of the order code, for example VVA1000-12. On the outside, it has blue RAL 5015 paint, just like a painted vessel.
- Is an ALM-coated vessel galvanised?
- No, it is painted on the outside. The painted and galvanised versions are separate variants on the same product page and do not have the ALM coating inside.
- Do you have air receivers for the food industry smaller than 270 l?
- Not with the ALM coating. For smaller volumes, there are stainless steel vessels from 5 l, which are chosen where air purity matters.
- Do you supply an ALM-coated vessel with fittings?
- No, we do not supply fully equipped vessels with an internal coating for the food industry. The safety valve, pressure gauge and shut-off valves are ordered separately.
- Is an ALM-coated vessel also suitable for nitrogen?
- Yes. The standard vessels are intended for compressed air and nitrogen alike, and the vessels rated down to −20 °C also for argon, helium, oil and oxygen.
