Compressed air is the most widely used form of energy after natural gas and electricity, and at the same time, it is among the most expensive. In Europe, it accounts for 10% of generated energy, totaling 80 TWh, which is the output of five "Temelín" power plants. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that compressors run as efficiently as possible. The current standard titled "ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems" encourages the monitoring of consumption in enterprises. The long name of the standard is usually shortened to ISO 50001. The standard describes in detail what specifically a company should do to have the consumption of its machines and equipment under control. It is essentially about implementing a so-called energy management system, which can then be certified. |

How to obtain ISO 50001 certification?
Certification can only be performed by authorized persons. These specialists are able to guide a company through the entire process and advise on everything that needs to be done so that the certificate can be issued. They also assist with applications for financial support for implementing an energy management system.
Is ISO 50001 certification mandatory?
Only large enterprises (with more than 250 employees or an annual turnover exceeding €50 million) have the obligation to have an energy management system certified according to ISO 50001.
... however, small and medium-sized enterprises that voluntarily implement an energy management system can apply for support for energy management studies and audits from European Union funds.
- A small enterprise (up to 49 employees) can be reimbursed for up to 70% of incurred expenses from EU funds.
- A medium-sized enterprise (50 to 249 employees) can be reimbursed for up to 60% of incurred expenses.
- The maximum absolute amount of support for studies is 350,000 CZK.
These EU funds are managed and allocated by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic: www.mpo.cz.
ISO 50001 certificate opens the way to subsidies for new technologies
Advantages of an ISO 50001 certificate:
- Energy bills will be reduced in the long term.
- Enterprises with a certified energy management system are more likely to obtain subsidies for new technologies. These are often restricted for companies without ISO 50001 certification.
The OP PIK subsidy program (Operational Program Enterprise and Innovations for Competitiveness) will run until 2020. The program is managed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic, and according to it, the score evaluation in the subsidy application will be increased for every organization with a certified energy management system according to ISO 50001.
