Innovation of dryers and refrigerants according to EU legislation

Guide: Innovation of MDX condensation dryers and new EU legislation for refrigerants

MDX condensation dryers from MARK

In condensation dryers, compressed air is first cooled to a temperature lower than the pressure dew point. As a result, water vapor in the air condenses into water, which is then removed from the air.

Characteristics of MDX condensation dryers:

  • for industrial and workshop operations
  • pressure dew point +3 °C
  • flow rate 350 to 10,000 l/min

On the portal www.kompresory-vzduchotechnika.cz you can find an MDX dryer suitable for your operation: MDX Condensation Dryers

The offer is easy to navigate. Based on the compressor air flow in liters per minute (l/min) or m3/s, you can find the correct type (see table).

Performance range table for MDX dryers

MDX dryers have been innovated in several ways:

  • high-efficiency heat exchangers with integrated separator
  • ecological refrigerant R410A (marked in red in tables) and new refrigerant compressors
  • dew point indicator with LED display
  • new control panel and easy access to electrical components
  • remote management option and general alarm
  • LogiDrain electronic drain
  • optional variants
Innovated features of MDX compressed air dryers

Marked in red is the fact that since February 2017, a new type of refrigerant, R410A, has been used in more powerful MDX dryer types instead of R404A. This also reduced the power input of these compressors by 22%.

The new refrigerant is used in MDX3600 to MDX84000 dryers. The same type of refrigerant is also used in the most powerful MDX dryers with a flow rate greater than 10,000 l/min.

Refrigerants and global warming

The refrigerants used in MDX dryers are hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) based. This substance belongs to the category of fluorinated greenhouse gases, so-called F-gases (including PFCs and sulfur hexafluoride SF6).

F-gases do not damage the Earth's ozone layer, but they have an adverse effect on global warming – some of them up to a thousand times greater than CO2 molecules.

GWP is a measure of a refrigerant's impact on global warming

The impact on global warming is expressed by the GWP (Global Warming Potential) parameter. If a refrigerant has a GWP = 1430, one molecule released into the atmosphere has the same effect as 1430 released molecules of CO2.

F-gases are subject to the European F-gas regulation, which prescribes:

  • Equipment containing F-gas with an equivalent of over 5 tonnes of CO2 must be checked for leaks regularly: once a year if the CO2 equivalent is > 5 tonnes; once every six months if the CO2 equivalent is > 50 tonnes.
  • The test result must be better than 3 grams of leakage per year.
  • Leak checks may only be performed by a certified company.

How to calculate the CO2 equivalent in tonnes for refrigerant in a dryer?

Find out:

  • How many kilograms of refrigerant your dryer contains.
  • The GWP value of the refrigerant you are using.
  • Multiply both values:
CO2 equivalent in tonnes = amount of refrigerant (kg) × GWP / 1000
Formula for calculating CO2 equivalent for refrigerants in dryers

Since Jan 1, 2017, it is necessary to check hermetic tightness for powerful MDX50000 dryers (flow rate over 50,000 l/min).

Dryer refrigerant label

The EU directive prescribes that from Jan 1, 2017, the dryer label must also contain:

  • GWP value
  • CO2 tonnes equivalent (Applies only to refrigerants with GWP>150.)

Use of refrigerants in products and during repairs

From January 1, 2020, it will be forbidden to manufacture dryers with refrigerant that has a GWP greater than 2,500. This ban will affect R404a refrigerant.

If the refrigerant has GWP>2500 and is in a volume where the CO2 tonnes equivalent > 40 t, then:
From January 1, 2020, only recycled refrigerant with GWP>2500 may be added (not new).
From January 1, 2030, only refrigerant with GWP<2500 may be added.

Ecological refrigerant R410A

Innovations of MDX dryers include R410A ecological refrigerant for dryers with a capacity of 3,600 l/min and higher (models MDX3600 to MDX18000). Compared to R404A, R410A has a 50% lower GWP value.

MDX dryers use three types of refrigerant with these GWP values:

New refrigerant compressor reduces power consumption

A highly efficient rotary compressor specifically designed for R410A refrigerant has a good coefficient of performance (for models MDX3600 to MDX18000).

Advantages of the new refrigerant compressor:

  • Higher energy efficiency = reduction of the total dryer power input by an average of 22%.
  • Integrated liquid separator prevents liquid slugs and the risk of liquid separator pipe bursting.
  • Longer lifespan, reduced risk of leaks, low vibrations.

Dew point indicator

All MDX series dryer models are equipped with a modern display. Models MDX1200 to 7700 also feature temperature control: switching the fan on and off depending on the temperature measured by two NTC temperature sensors.

The display shows this information:

The warning display shows:

  • alarm in case of high or low dew point values
  • fan failure signal (models MDX 1200 to 7700)

Dew point indication – clear at first glance

Monitoring the dew point temperature is important in condensation dryers. The display makes it clear at first glance if the dew point is OK.

Remote management and general alarm

Dryer models MDX10000 to MDX84000 can be connected to allow:

  • remote switching on and off of the dryer,
  • use of one free contact for remote reporting of a general alarm (fan alarm, signal from min./max. pressure switch).
  • For models MDX24000 to MDX84000, an additional free contact for remote condensate drain alarm.

Logidrain condensate drain

All MDX dryer models have the new Logidrain type instead of the old ECD drain. This new drain is equipped with new features and can be purchased here: Automatic Condensate Drains

  • two sensors for monitoring the condensate level (maximum/minimum)
  • Viton FKM membrane with higher lifespan
  • dual strainer for better filtration of impurities
  • LED indication signals alarm, voltage and one multi-function button
  • seal kit available for maintenance

The drain has a new improved float with three holes

The new design float is designed not to stick to the bottom of the drain container. A larger gap between the float surface and the bottom prevents clogging of the discharge hole.

Optional variants

Dryer models MDX400 to 1800 can be ordered in variants:

  • with support for filter mounting
  • with outgoing piping with filter support
  • packed in a wooden box

Filters are not included in the delivery.
