Air compressors are a crucial and indispensable element of many industrial plants, workshops, and ordinary home garages. These compressed air devices power pneumatic tools, automated lines, or various types of spray gun equipment – such as spray guns for painting or surface sandblasting. Although they are extremely reliable machines when handled correctly, most of them require regular maintenance and occasional repairs are unavoidable. But how do you recognize when it makes sense to have the compressor repaired and when, on the contrary, it pays off much more to buy a new machine? We will advise you on this in this article from our advisory center.

Key decision factors: Age of the machine and parts availability
Imagine the unpleasant situation where, in the middle of a busy workday, the compressor in your auto repair shop or workshop suddenly starts acting up, overheating, or stops working altogether. How should you proceed in such a moment?
First of all, consider the overall age of your equipment. If you run an older compressor model with many years of demanding operation (where the compressor was, for example, pushed to its limits for a long time due to business expansion), it is often much more reasonable to consider a complete replacement and an investment in a new compressor with an adequate power reserve. In practice, you will also very often find that the availability of spare parts and special accessories for old models is significantly limited. And that's not even mentioning unbranded compressors from China – forget about getting the necessary parts for those entirely. Furthermore, thanks to constant technological development, newer compressors boast much higher reliability and incomparably better energy efficiency than previously manufactured machines. A great leap forward has been made, for example, by oil-free piston compressors – typically the ABAC Zero, which were previously categorized as compressors for completely undemanding and occasional use.
Is the repair worth it? Compare the service costs
The second key indicator is the cost of the repair itself.
- 🔹 Minor faults: A clogged filter, worn seal, or cracked pressure hose represent quick and relatively cheap repairs that you can easily handle yourself.
- 🔹 Serious problems: Electric motor failure, an unpleasant piston seizure, or a damaged pressure vessel usually mean very high expenses. In these cases, the cost of repair and parts often makes no economic sense, and buying new equipment may be more advantageous.

Servicing our best-selling compressors normally costs anywhere from higher hundreds of crowns to thousands of crowns, depending on the scope of work and the type of equipment. When deciding between a repair and buying new equipment, it is important to also consider the warranty. Some manufacturers or companies – exactly like our company – offer an extended warranty on their products because they fully trust them, and if your compressor is still within this warranty, it will be advantageous to have it repaired, even if it takes time. Generally, with dry equipment like compressors, we advise our customers to pay extra for an extended warranty.
4 steps to proper maintenance: Prevention extends lifespan
High-quality and regular maintenance will guarantee your compressor long-term reliability and maximum operational efficiency, regardless of what type of machine you have. You can always find the maintenance plan in the documentation, as it should properly be part of every compressor, and you can easily apply the basic tasks just like regular car maintenance. Focus mainly on these aspects:
- 🔹 Cleanliness and filtration: Keep the compressor clean and regularly remove settled dust particles, which can cause critical overheating or blockage of the mechanism. The intake filter, for example, often gets clogged this way and must be cleaned regularly, but also check the cleanliness of other parts, such as the cooler.
- 🔹 Sufficient and high-quality lubrication: Oil compressor models cannot do without a sufficient amount of quality lubricant. Regularly check the oil using the sight glass (or dipstick) and top it up in time. Many users forget to change compressor oils on time, which has fatal consequences for the smooth running of the pistons or the functionality of seals and screws due to the rapid degradation of lubricating capabilities, because such a neglected compressor will undoubtedly start overheating quickly.
- 🔹 Condition of pressure components: Continuously inspect safety and pressure valves, pressure gauges, and other critical system components, such as connected hoses. Even the slightest damage and wear of many pressure components leads to undesirable air leaks and a sharp decrease in equipment efficiency. At the same time, leaks will cost you a lot of money because expensive compressed air will go to waste.
- 🔹 Electrical system safety: Ensure that all electrical components remain safely insulated and in first-class condition.
